Telescopes..

My kids are really into space right now so I thought a telescope would be a good Christmas gift. I don't want to get them a 20 dollar wal mart one. I want them to be able to see Saturn's rings and such. Anyone have experience with this? Recommendations?

I know you mentioned you don't want a Wal Mart one but every year at Christmas I see them selling some higher priced ones at their Vision Care center and they look like nice ones. I know nothing about telescopes but the boxes look good. Might be worth checking out.

I'll ask my wife about the telescope, she used to have a very nice one when she wanted to be an aeronautical engineer. This was one that some at NASA told her about and it wasn't a budget killer either.

We have one kind of like this http://www.telescopes.com/telescopes/refracting-telescopes/meadeetx80attcastrotelescopewithautostar.cfm- ours is so old that I doubt they make our precise model. You can work with it manually, but the nice thing about it is that it has a computer that will find things for you. The hardest part is orienting your telescope correctly so the computer know where to go. It's been a long time since we've used it so I can't remember exactly how to do it.

My kid really wants one. I downloaded Google sky map. Made her happy.

We've already spent too much money on Christmas to buy another big thing, her birthday is next month. We'll probably get it for her then. Thanks for this thread.
