Cub Scout Den Leader help

SCP

Recommended Posts

My 6 year old joined the Tiger Cub deal this year because they sold him on it at school. I figured what the hell? The pinewood derby and camping is fun. Now they have all this popcorn sales bullsh*t and the scout leaders put more pressure on you than any sales job I have ever had. Now our den leader is flaking out and leadership is being forced on me, even though I travel all the time and miss half the crap. So, my question is do I buy the uniform with pants or with shorts?

I am an Eagle scout. Don't admit to it a lot, don't remember really anything except the experience itself. I do believe it teaches young men great things (that are intangible like drive) but in the older ages you will get made fun of bad and unless/until you actually become an Eagle, it won't help with the ladies either...so make sure your son can handle being a dork for his 'whole life' (according to him) if he enjoys it. The light at the end is being an Eagle...I banged many chicks at church just with my status.

To seriously answer the question, you don't want to go camping or do merit badges in shorts for many many reasons. Them being that short more than doubles that list of various reasons.

It pisses me off because I knew this leadership stuff would fall in my lap. I already do the coaching thing. I sat there at that first meeting with my mouth shut because I did not want to be a den leader. Now all the other dad's pussied out and I'm having to do it all.

I had shorts for the first few years, but they have these zip off hybrid things that are useful. Look ghey as sh*t, but they're incredible when camping and ishh.

As for popcorn sales, our troop just dropped that and started selling Frazier Fur wreaths around Christmas. Make so much more money off of that than we ever did with popcorn.

Also, never let your kid drop out. It might get boring, but that Eagle Scout status has honestly helped me out tremendously. I've heard of some people who think more highly of their Eagle than their college degree.

    • Ehhhh except a lot of it was his refusal in college not to play hero ball.....  The two things he greatly improved at the NFL level were his accuracy on the run and learning he didn't have to take the deep shot every play.   That said when taking a massive boom or bust athlete at QB the most important thing is their work ethic/coachability/desire to improve

    • The new (released today) FOX ONE app will allow you access to watch your Local FOX Station - similar to how the Paramount Plus app allows you access to watch your local CBS station It'll cost you $20/month for the privilege, but if you're having trouble accessing the over-the-air antenna for FOX, this could be an option to consider the new ESPN app will give you access to ESPN content, but not to the local ABC affiliate. A reminder: if you currently get ESPN via some TV provider (cable, satellite, youtube, etc) then you should be able to use the new ESPN app via your provider login, no additional payment required
