Football 101 - For Newbies

Here's one matchup to watch for:

Julio Jones #11 vs. Captain Munnerlyn #41

Gamble will draw Roddy White most of the time, since he still plays their #1 WR position, which leaves Captain unfortunately overmatched against a dynamic rookie receiver. Hopefully Godfrey and Martin will be able to provide decent help over the top.

I dont recall captain coming out on top of any other wrs....much less ones more talented that julio jones

It's a really simple equation.

Keep Atlanta RBs under 100 all purpose yards + Do not turn the ball over = Carolina Win

Ryan throwing the ball doesn't scare me. We lose when RBs have 100 plus games and allow the other team to maintain long drives keeping our shitty defense on the field and when we commit turnovers. We can beat or outscore Ryan throwing the ball.

Ryan's bread and butter is play action. If Turner gets rolling, he will start airing it out. Last game he threw some weak bombs to White, and we bailed them out with stupid PI penalties.

If we shore up that secondary play, and not gift them field position and possessions at the one yard line, I like our chances. If we limit the deep balls, then focus has to be on Gonzales underneath.

It will be interesting to see how the Falcons defend Newton. Their best coverage man in Grimes is out as well as another corner Hayden. LaFell and Nanee hasn't shown they can get seperation in Man to Man coverage, and expect to see bracket coverage on Smith in man to man situations which means the TE's will have to step up big. Man coverage also leaves a lot of room for Newton to operate if he breaks the pocket. I expect to see more zone coverage. Newton has shown he has the arm strength and accuracy to hit the zone between the CB and the Safety. So expect Atlanta to roll their zone coverage over towards Steve Smith. So expect to see lots of passes in the deep 1/3 on the opposite side of 89. If we can hit some passes in that deep 1/3 away from 89 early that should really open things up for Smith.

Is it just me, or do the panthers seem to do better as a defense as they work their way down the depth chart. This week following injuries to both starting tackles, we hold michael turner to less than 100 yards.

The Falcons were playing Sam Baker at RG where he's terrible. On the Applewhite sack, for example, he got absolutely blown up at the point of attack. He was eventually benched and probably won't see the field again unless someone gets hurt.

The Panthers got up so quickly on the Falcons and dominated their offensive line in the first half so quickly that they didn't have a chance to establish it. In the second half, the Falcons had to play catch up, and started taking advantae of a lot of matchups. We kept Godfrey in the box where he's a fantastic safety. When the Falcons went to a no huddle and let Ryan call the plays at the line, they just started abusing matchups, namely Butler on Julio and whenver they could get a linebacker on Gonzalez.

Combine these factors with Turner's annual late season swoon, eh. It didn't really have anything to do with our players. The problems the Falcons had with protection in the first half were easily corrected, and situations dictated that they emphasize the pass in the 2nd half.

So true I saw Ryan eyeing where #41 was and the plays seemed to go at him. I like Cap but teams are keying in on him with some success.
