Newton Today

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Clearly suffering from the adjustment to a longer season and the rigors of the pro game.

He's had quite the evolution this season. Went from looking like a god early on to settling down and looking like a solid pro quarterback to looking like a promising rookie suffering through the rookie wall.

I know there are some who will say he's taken a step back. I have to disagree. Yes, he's having some issues, but I've seen some very good pro quarterbacks have similar issues down the stretch in their rookie seasons, so I'm not worried.

My expectations for this season were never that high anyway. Said a long time ago that all I wanted was a reason to be optimistic. Even with a game like today, I still have that.

Give Newton a full offseason of training and conditioning, and there's plenty to look forward to next season.

I agree except for one thing. Third quarter and for that matter, the second half, has been bad for us all year, not just in this game. Especially against the Falcons.

That boneheaded first int seemed to be the turning point. With our crappy defense we live and die based on turnovers.

Game was over mentally when we went into half like we had won already. Coaches need to call plays like we are down 21 the whole game. I wanna run up 50 points. Fug this playing to win first half and playing not to lose second half. Playcalling becomes so predictable in second half

The int's were huge. The first was a terrible play. He is a rookie and made a huge rookie mistake. I think an offseason to study and work with his receivers will help heading into next year. would like to see him bounce back from adversity a little better. He is adjusting to the league adjusting to him. His mechanics were inconsistent in the 2nd half. A large part in because he had pressure in his face. Hopefully he will continue to improve. Wish he would fire up the troops when adversity strikes instead of sitting there alone but that may be because he is a rookie. He may be more comfortable to get in someones face in the next year or two.

Remind you of anybody?

(guy that used to wear #17 perhaps)

Like most gunslinger types, Newton is very streaky. I doubt that'll ever change. It might never look as clean and crisp as a game run by a Brady/Manning/Brees type.

Still, he's in position to be the best quarterback this team has had in a while. If he lives up to his potential, he'll be the best QB this team has ever had.

That doesn't remind me at all of Jake. He was solid in the 4th quarter, especially his first year. He still has more comeback winnings or game winning drives than most quarterbacks.

Jake had a different issue. It was a game wide issue, where he just turned into a different person, and it seemed to happen like clock-work every 3-4 games. Not every game though. His last couple of years it almost became expected where we would lose every third or fourth game after a winning streak. Jake lost focus after a couple of string of wins and got sloppy while Cam loses focus after two or three quarters.

just curious Mr. Scot, did you watch Manning as a rookie? He was very streaky when he was a rookie... He'd overthrow receivers, then fire a bullet into tight coverage. He'd go into quarters and halves doing nothing, then explode on people. I think it's too early to say that we'll never see Cam have a "clean and crisp" game like Manning. A lot can change in a year.

Jake used to have some awful third quarters, but he'd follow them up with some brilliant 4th quarters. Newton's halfway there on that front.

I expect next year he'll either develop the 4th quarter mojo or ease up on the 3rd quarter issues.

Yeah, I did. Manning was a more accurate type of passer than Newton, but even he wasn't immune to rookie struggles.

Said it before. I see Newton developing into a Brett Favre/John Elway (head scratchers followed up by moments of brilliance) type rather than a consistent pinpoint accurate Manning/Brady/Brees.

I'm fine with that.
