Apparently, a missed extra point in the NFC Championship game last season has the New Orleans Saints considering a change at kicker.

The Saints sent a 6 th round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins for kicker Olindo Mare on April 3. While the move makes sense for the Dolphins, who just signed Jay Feeley, it is a questionable move by the Saints who already had John Carney under contract until 2008 (they released Carney shortly after the trade).

Carney, 43, hit 23 of his 25 field goal attempts in 2006, including his one attempt from 51 yards out. For his career, which has also included stints in Tampa Bay and San Diego, he has completed 81.8 percent of his field goals and 98.6 percent of his extra points. In fact, his only real mistake last season was a late extra point attempt in the NFC title game against the Chicago Bears that went wide right and kept the game from going into overtime.

He is currently ranked 7 th all time for scoring.

Mare is 9 years younger than Carney, which may be the biggest determining factor in the trade. But, if you're going to trade away a draft pick, you would think you would be doing it in an effort to upgrade the spot. Mare completed just 72.2 percent of his field goal tries last season and was 1-6 on tries beyond 50 yards. In fact, for his career, Mare has only completed 46.7 percent of his attempts from that distance. Carney has completed nearly 58% of his tries. And, even though the last couple of seasons have been spent playing in a dome, most of his career was spent playing in outdoor stadiums like the one Mare plays in.

Even if Mare does prove to be an upgrade at the spot, it still makes little sense to give up the draft choice for him. By signing Feeley, the Dolphins already had already made it clear who their kicker for 2007 would be. While it is possible they would have kept both kickers on their roster, it was also very unlikely and, chances are, Mare would have been released at some point during the off season. Because of the nature of their job, kickers don't need a lot of time in training camp to adjust and, with a kicker already on their roster; the Saints could have waited the Dolphins out and given nothing in compensation.

Over the past couple of years, the Saints have made some good off season moves but this one is definitely not one of them.

Coach Jim Mora and kicker Olindo Mare could agree on one thing after Sunday's game.

Well, actually they agreed on two things since that's how many field-goal attempts Mare missed in Sunday's 25-19 loss to Chicago.

"They were just bad kicks," Mare said.

He won't get an argument from his coach in that regard after Mare missed a 43-yard attempt in the final minute of the first half and a 34-yard try in the third quarter.

"No excuses for those," Mora said. "If you're a kicker in the National Football League, you should make those kicks. Bottom line. End of story. Period. No excuses."

Doesn't sound like the coach was too happy with Seattle's field-goal kicking on Sunday.

"Gotta' make those kicks," Mora said. "Especially in a game like this where you're kicking and scratching and fighting and playing your tail off, and you miss those kicks.

"Not acceptable. Not acceptable. Absolutely not acceptable."

When asked if he'll look at making a change, Mora said the team will look at changes everywhere before summarizing the situation by saying his team would not fight its rear-end off to have a field-goal kicker miss kicks.

One week ago, Mora served as Seattle's motivational speaker, a coach trying to rally a team whose quarterback spent the second half of a loss at the hospital. On Sunday, More was more somber, a coach whose team is 1-2 with a game at undefeated Indianapolis next week. And when it came to the kicking, Mora was somberly seething.

Mare missed both kicks toward the north end zone. Robbie Gould, a former Pro Bowler, missed the only field goal he attempted toward the north end zone, too, a 53-yard early in the first quarter.

"They pay us to do our job and that's part of my job," Mare said. "That's part of my job and I didn't do it very good."

He had got criticized by the media, when he called Mare out like that publicly. But he was telling the truth, Mare is fuging awful.

Another good hurney signing. There are so many kickers out there and hurney chose to go with a mediocre 38 year old guy and give him a 4 year deal with a 4 fuging million dollar signing bonus. Wish I could be as bad at my job as mare and get 4 mil for signing on the dotted line.

Mare is the kicker that Mora took all that heat for? Wow. I remember when he made those comments, and the backlash he took that ultimately led to his dismissal 2 years ago. But didnt realize it was Mare. LOL. Mora was hot when he said that stuff.
