Fun Facts about the Texans

i like our offense against the texan defense.

i don't like our defense against the texan offense.

i don't like the texans ability to put games away and our inability to do the same.

This. I hope for the best, but now expect the worst.

If the defense can hold Arian Foster hostage like they have the past 2 RB's, and Cam doesn't turn the ball over. We've got a phenomenal chance. Because, last time I checked TJ Yates is not Matt Ryan. I know its a bunch of obvious statements. I wish it was that easy.

YOu might hold Foster but you forgot about Ben Tate and Derrick Ward...arguably the best stable of RBs in the NFL. Foster will go over 1000 this weekend against the panthers and Tate probably will go over 1000 yds next thursday in Indy. I like Stewart and Williams but they are no where close. I used to think the Panthers had the best tandem in the league.

Houston's D is overrated. Not saying they aren't good but statistcally they look better than they are.

They also flat out gamble on D which leaves them open for chunks......Atl just whiffed on some plays but Hou was begging to get hurt w/ the big play.

Haha your kidding right? you are funny. The defense is good because Wade has a nice rotation and he keeps his guys fresh...we have depth for the first time ever.

I remember the last Texans game...we let freakin' OLD Ahmad Green run all over us

Yes thats the one good game Ahman had in 2 years with us. Andre really toasted your secondary in that game though and second half we took Demarcus Faggins off of Steve Smith and put Dunta Robinson on him and pretty much shut smitty down.

Double Trouble is still the best duo in the league......Texans are just leaning on their great duo. Silly to say Stewart/Williams are no where close.....NFL record books when they are leaned on would argue otherwise

again, i didn't say there weren't good.....said they were overrated.

Bottom line is you can take 2 indentical defenses.....have one play the top 3 offenses in the NFL and one play the bottom 3. One of those statistically will look superior. Texans D has benefited from weak offensive opponents

We've definitely benefited from week offenses. But we've held their production to less than they've been able to produce vs their average. Check it out, in our games against every team this year, the opposing offenses have produced less than their average.

I don't mean to brag, most of this is just as surprising to me as anyone, but it is what it is.

Our only true test though was New Orleans.... too early in the season to be definitive though. If we played that game again, I'm sure the outcome would be different.

Cam scares me though. He's an anomaly. Anyone in Houston tells you we're not worried about "needing" to score 30 points is a closet Panther's fan.

Here's to you getting you're butts spanked.

hey, I said in every post the Houston D was legit.....they just look better b/c of weak offensive opponents. They are a top D...but the #1 rank is something they hold only b/c of weak opponents.

If you played NO again.....with a weak ground game and TJ Yates at QB. I think the NO offense gets more chances and therefore puts up more production on Houston.

I got so lucky this week. First round of the playoffs and my starting running back is playing the worst DL in the league. I hate to root against us, but I wouldn't mind Arian Foster scoring 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 times :D

so if Carolina did shut him down......you would be upset.

    • You may be interested to know that the average depth of separation is dependent upon the type of route run. Though go-routes are the most type of route run, they also produce the least amount of separation (and, of course, completions).   "The average pass catcher runs a go route on nearly a quarter of all routes (22.3%), the highest percentage of any route type in our data. However, those routes are targeted roughly 1 out of 10 times (10.8 percent), the lowest target rate of any route. The WR screen is the least-run route (3.4%), and it's the only route where the average target is behind the line of scrimmage. But it's also targeted at the highest rate (40.7%) and early in the play (1.6 seconds average time to throw). The most targeted routes outside of the WR Screen? The out (27.8%) and slant (25.2%) routes are the next most popular across the league."     "The most valuable routes by expected points added per target were the post (+0.48) and corner (+0.43) routes. The go route (+0.19) ranked seventh on the list of 10 route types. The go route (+0.19) ranked seventh on the list of 10 route types. One possible reason for this: It's harder to separate on go routes, which put the player on a straight path, than on posts or corners, which ask the player to make a cut. Targeted pass catchers on posts and corners average 2.4 yards and 2.3 yards of separation from the nearest defender, respectively, while pass catchers targeted on go routes average just 1.8 yards of separation."   https://www.nfl.com/news/next-gen-stats-intro-to-new-route-recognition-model#:~:text=Targeted pass catchers on posts,) and slant (+0.26).   I would expect that Thielen would have an easier time catching the ball based that he runs the routes where it's easier to get open. Tet? Yet to be seen, but we may be better served getting him on some slants and crossers also.  In general, receivers are going to average a lower completion percentage and yards of separation on certain types of routes than others, that's why we shouldn't necessarily be taking stats, even advanced ones, at face value, as there are dynamics that most aren't even thinking about.  In terms of Tet, he's bigger and somewhat slower than a smaller dude, so you'd expect him not to have as much separation on go-routes, but his catch radius is massive and his hands are awesome. Hitting him in stride will probably be killer, but of course QBs are less accurate on go-routes according to the stats. Depending upon Tet's route versatility and how he is used, we could have a unicorn though. He's relatively fast, has great hands and gets YAC (and on an off note, if X can hold on to the ball, he's dangerous as well because he already has shown some separation ability).
    • Most elite WRs aren't necessarily burners. Not a lot of elite WRs in the modern era were 4.3 guys. If anything, sometimes it seems like the super fast guys use their speed as a crutch and it hampers their development in the intricacies of route running.
