Race For Rookie of the Year

4. [3] Cam Newton, QB, CAR: +6.9 (967 snaps)

As great as Newton has been–and he has been great–the Panthers’ QB has been far from perfect. He’s made a plethora of rookie errors the guys above him haven’t. That’s not to do a disservice to Newton whose year has been simply remarkable. He simply needs to become a more consistent passer to be the player his highlight reel suggests he might be.

He's behind two defensive players and a LT here btw

Refocused: Panthers at Texans

The Carolina Panthers came out of the gates fast in this one and led 21-0 at the half, then staved off a late Houston Texans rally for an entertaining 28-13 road win. Without co-ordinator Wade Phillips on the sideline, the Texans No. 1 ranked defense looked vulnerable and they were hurt by some costly mistakes on offense, ending their seven game winning streak.

The Texans fell a game behind New England for home field advantage in the AFC and although it’s impressive that they’ve managed to keep winning without Mario Williams, Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub, it’s uncertain how well equipped they are to cope with some of the AFC’s better teams. As we said earlier in the year, the 5-9 Panthers continue to look like a team that might be a force to be reckoned with next season.

There were some interesting performances this week, so let’s highlight some of the most influential:

He is 4th in the race for ROTY?....wtf are they smoking?

they have a disclaimer that there award is "all positions are equal".

meaning, they don't look at a QB and K differently. If you are good, you are good. You don't get penalized b/c of your position vs. another.

gotcha...I'm not really familiar with that site and didn't see that. Thanks for the explanation.

That's the smart man's ROTY race. We all know that the NFL's ROTY race is about hype..and no rookie can match Cam's hype.

Really..To say Cam has made "plethora of mistakes?" A Plethora!! So it's clear you can't discern the difference between opinions and reality. Outside of sitting there and over analyzing everything Cam does, what plethora of mistakes has he made? And why are we comparing apples to oranges when it comes to what he does vs. other positions?

not when you are trying to be as objective as possible.

The last time I checked, a LB was neither expected to take his team to victory week in and out, nor was all eyes on every move he made.

So, no they are not being very objective. There is no way you are being objective if you feel what is expected of QB is the same as what is expected of a LB.

Also, when we're talking about those who make a living blogging or writing for the sake of getting our attention and playing on our emotions, the word "objective" isn't always the best adjective used to describe their thought pattern.

I want to see if Andrew Luck is half as successful as Cam next season will these folks be as "objective" with him in regards to the ROTY award.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
