Needs and 1st Round Availables

I'm sure trading back would not be easy as we make it out to be but I also remember who runs the Cincinnati Bengals. I can envision a scenario where they attempt to trade up to get Richardson OR Justin Blackmon. They could also fall in love with Kirkpatrick since Leon Hall will be coming off an injury and Marvin Lewis is a defensive guy. I'd like their second round pick in a trade.

I have a question..........why is it that the same group of people that scream we need defensive line pressure help because that is what makes our secondary look so bad want to draft, in the 1st rd, a slightly above average CB that plays on a beast defense that makes him look better than he really is?

Also, people here vastly underestimate the difficulty of trading back. If someone doesn't call you wanting to move up then it's very unlikely to happen.

I like the idea of moving back this year because of where we draft and the lack of a third, but it's certainly not something I would count on.

So true!

OSU's safety looked damn good last night, no idea where he's ranked.

You don't draft OG in the top 10 and I don't see it as a need. Bell will only get better. Going from UDFA to starter in a month is tough.

I like our DE rotation of Hardy, Keiser and Applewhite.

DT we get Edwards and Fua back to clog the middle and McClain to penetrate and get after the passer. Shirley, Kearse and Neblett all played well. I'm actually ok with our DT's.

CB- I love Captain, but as the Cb 2 he's in over his head and would rather see him at the nickel or dime spot. He's VERY valuable to ST's as a great gunner and tackler.

FS- Martin struggled outside of a few nice plays. I'm tired of converting guys and want to draft a true FS and let Godfrey bash heads at SS.

WLB- I'm as big a fan of TD as there is, but he can't be relied upon. I don't know how Senn would work full time as the starter, but there are several nice options in the draft.

WR isn't a need IMO, but Blackmon is my dream pick, he's the only guy I would take at 8-9, but he won't be there. We do need another burner to replace Smith at some point.

I agree with a lot of what you said. DT and CB (people forget Hogan will be our CB addition) are not needs like people think. DE? I think Hardy and Keiser will step up.

I agree that we do not draft OG unless we trade down, but I think we will cut Wharton. Salary reasons. I would love DeCastro in the lineup, but only if I could get a second rounder to trade down.

I see us taking OLT if one of the top 3 are available.

First, in the extremely unlikely event Justin Blackmon is available when we pick, I really hope we unplug the phone lines and send the card in. Second, your generalization that the Bengals are a bad organization that makes bad trades is far from accurate. We're talking about the very same front office that landed a first rounder and a second, which could possibly (not likely) become another first for Carson fuging Palmer....

Maybe because qbs had all day to throw.Brees could have eaten a meal by the time we were getting to him.Even Hurney admitted in his interview that getting pressure was a major need.Unless we get better at blitzs or change to a 3-4 the DL has to be the ones to step up

We could certainly use more pass rush, but our DE2 >>>>> our CB2 and FS and I'm not trying to say Hardy is an all-pro, I'm just saying we don't have ANYTHING at CB2 (outside of possible potential in Hogan and maybe improved play out of Butler) or FS. Regardless, Hardy has proven more capable at his position than any CB we have except Gamble and any S we have except Godfrey. I think it'd be a bigger upgrade to focus on our secondary first and DEs second.

With that said, if they decide Coples is as good as he looks like he CAN be I'm ok with getting him 1st and a CB or S in the 2nd (if S, I hope Cliff Harris falls to the 4th!) I'm not sold on Kirkpatrick's ability to either stay healthy or play CB in the NFL. (disclaimer: I've only watched Kirkpatrick's youtube videos and read what internet analysts have to say.)

Agreed! Now, why is everyone high on two CB's that play on defenses that make them look better than they are vs. that CB making big plays on pooty pass rush defenses?

I wish I had the answer but the draft is only a piece of the puzzle in fixing our defensive woes.I get the feeling that we will still be in a rebuilding phase next year unless we can bring in some veteran talent which is something Hurney does not usually do.I do think we need to draft players that can come in and make an imediate impact.I do know that if we cannot get better pressure on the qb we are screwed.

in general i agree, people act like it's always an option and it's not. though i will say the patriots figure out a way to pull off those kind of trades a LOT.

but they don't do as you said, sit and wait for someone to call them. some teams are just better at playing that poker game of convincing teams that they or some other team is about to ****** up "their guy".

also willing to take a discount (sometimes a sizeable one) on the picks normal value is huge

I keep hearing people saying DT isn't a need or DE isn't a need or corner or LB...then why are we so bad. We need to upgrade every position we can, BPA on defense for the whole draft in my opinion. We need a new starter at FS and I'm loving Markelle Martin from OSU and I'd like him in the second round

I seriously doubt we cut Wharton, but I could easily see him getting extended or restructured for some cap relief. Same maybe with Smith, Gamble and a couple others.

If you ONLY look at the balance sheet and the stats, you have to cut him.

http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol

However, he is a leader, and he is a great run blocker. Is he worth $7 million--no. I would restructure him and make him take less.

MY question is this: If we draft a player like Reiff or Martin who can play LT, does that make Wharton, our backup LT, more expendible?

TD has a roster bonus of about $9 million that is on the books. We will never pay a dime of it. If Hurney restructures and gives him more guaranteed money, I will find where he parks and let every bit of air out of his tires.
