Saints and Falcons both without 1st round picks for 2012 draft

Saints are in good shape (gag), Falcons not so much... giving up all those picks for Julio Jones and scoring 0 points on offense in the wildcard round has to sting.

I never understood the Falcons approach, they were bounced last year by the Packers because they couldn't play defense (failed to force one punt) so they ran out and traded half their draft away for another offensive skill player?

Personally, I believe this is one of those circumstances that will not help moreso than hurt them. They will not get as much help through the draft, but neither team is berift of talent. So one year should not break them.

Still nice to see them both in a spot of trouble though. I just do not see this as the beginning of the end sort of thing either. At least for NO. Atl is a different story. This very well could curtail their growth as a team.

When you have a Brees type of QB you are going to be competitive. Ryan is no Brees, so it could hurt Atl more down the line.

Just my thoughts. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CatMan, could not pie you so I will respond. I agree. You do not need a great D, just one that can make a few stops and get a turnover once in a while. Atl needed help on D, but drafted a WR. Does not make a lot of sense to me.

Fortunately for us, that trade slowed their growth enough that we just might be able to pass them this year. I hope.

Pie for Catman. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not real in favor of trading draft picks but evaluating this on the basis of who is drafted is not telling the whole story. If teams consistently draft poorly – then trade or no trade doesn’t matter.

Suppose San Diego had traded up and been able to draft not Ryan Leaf but Peyton Manning (who went #1)? Then, who wins? SD hands down. It really is about landing the right players, regardless of what you do with the pick.

one thing that is going to factor into the saints offseason is brees.

his contract is up and i have no doubt they'll keep him around. are they going to franchise him or are they going to give him a new deal. if they give him a new deal...what is that thing going to look like? i have a feeling it's going to look like peyton's and brady's contracts.

if either one of those is true, what kind of impact is that going to have on them being able to keep the slew of FAs they have this year? they've got carl nicks, coltson, and meachem hitting FA as well as a couple defensive guys like franklin and porter.

Imagine us winning the coin flip over Miami and having some QB-needy team pulling an Atlanta from last year and trading us a slew of picks to move up and grab Tannehill. With Miami needing a QB and with Ponder going so high last year you never know.

I'm having a hard time understanding the infatuation with Tannehill.

I mean if someone wants to trade us a slew of draft picks just to move up and take him, I'm all for it. But all I saw was occasional flashes of brilliance at TAMU surrounded by a lot of mediocrity.

Good point about Brees and the Aint's. They are going to pay him a buttload of money. Which will limit them as to other moves. What core players do you sign? Which do you allow to walk? Who do/can you bring in? All these and more confront teams with a franchise QB.

It is extremely difficult to feild a balanced team when your QB takes up such a big cap hit. Pitt already had a great D before Big Ben. As did the Ravens, Giants, and early NE. It is easier to restock a great D than to build one. So these kind of teams have a slight advantage.

Teams like GB, ATL, IND, and the current NE all have their money tied up on offense. As a result, their defense is shaky at best.

Good franchises seem to get the mixture right. Others seem to flail away. We are on the cusp of having this dilemma. I am very interested to see how we respond.

IMO, we have until Cam's contract comes up to build a roster that can withstand the yearly loss of key players.

Things are going to get exciting in Pantherland. And it is great to be able to say that and actually believe it.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
