some basic info

February, Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner promoted Wilks to Assistant Head Coach-Secondary.

San Diego’s pass defense has vastly improved with Wilks as its secondary coach. Prior to his arrival, the Chargers ranked 31st in the NFL against the pass. In 2009, his first year with the team, the Bolts improved 20 spots to rank 11th, before leading the NFL in 2010 in pass defense and total defense. The opponent’s passer rating against San Diego’s defense in 2010 was the league’s fourth-lowest (76.2), and the Chargers allowed the fifth-fewest touchdown passes in the NFL (18).

Wilks came to the Chargers from Chicago where in 2006, the Bears led the NFL in takeaways, won the NFC Championship and appeared in Super Bowl XLI.

A head and assistant coach on the collegiate level for 11 seasons, Wilks was named Division II Defensive Coordinator of the Year in 1998 by American Football Quarterly magazine after Savannah State led the nation in total defense.

A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Wilks played collegeiately at Appalachian State, finishing his career with 103 tackles, four interceptions and four blocked kicks. He played on NCAA I-AA playoff teams in 1989 and ’91. After graduation, Wilks went to training camp with the Seattle Seahawks in 1992, and after his release from Seattle, signed with the Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League for the ’93 season.

Wilks and wife, Marcia, have two daughters, Marissa and Melanni, and a son, Steven James.

welcome to the family Steve

    • He’s also 21 years old. I don’t know why fiz is so eager to label him a bust
    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
