Tuck rule memories

SC is showing the Brady tuck rule footage this morning. Anniversary of some kind.

I still don't get it. Based on the footage, Jake should have about a dozen fumbles over turned. Anyway, I would like somebody to try to makes sense of this for me. What I have read and what I am looking at still does not click for some reason.

Basically, How the fvck was that not a fumble?

Thanks.

maybe i'm stupid but the tuck rule still bewilders me

i think it's something to the effect of: if the arm is still traveling forward with possession of the ball while the quarterback is doing something vaguely resembling a passing motion, it's an incomplete pass. like if he completed his pump fake and the defender got there a split second later after the motion was finished, that would = fumble.

It was a fumble. The ruling said that his arm was going forward, so it was an incomplete pass. But you watch and it was basically Brady stopping his throwing motion and tucking the ball towards his body. He even touched it with his left hand.

After he tucked it, it was knocked loose, which should have been a fumble. The tuck rule is in place to make the motion of tucking the ball not a fumble, but once the motion is over and the ball is tucked it can be ruled a fumble if the ball is knocked loose.

I have watched it many times as well, IMO the ruling on the field was correct. I can't even remember why it was reviewed, under 2 minutes? Challenge? I don't know. But the Raiders got fugging screwed.

Basically since you cannot tell in mid motion if a forward motion is going to be a tuck or a pass the QB gets the benefit of the doubt of it being an incomplete pass.

I just heard it again as it was rehashed among some of the players in the game. I just do not agree. I think a judgement call has to be made. Clearly it was a fumble and even Tom Brady blushes when he says "we got the call, it was a very fortunate call for us"

Like you said, it still comes down to a judgement call so nothing has changed. Since then, I have seen it go both ways with no apparent rhyme or reason.

I think it should always be a judgement call. But that is not the case. If the arm is going forward its a pass per the rule book. Even if the motion includes bringing the ball in toward the body apparently.

I don't even know why they call it the tuck rule.

    • I agree it does seem the league is against Charlotte but the picks they've made have been questionable. They've had sure fire picks fall to them and they keep trying to build a army of forwards who cannot shoot for some reason lol. You got to make a move in offseason and or trade for scoring. I get the best aren't coming to Charlotte but theres been opportunities at solid players with experience, that would've come just to be the man here in Charlotte. They got to stop over thinking this in the draft too. Take the best scorers available! I'm hearing we need more size on the wing, a big man, great defender, etc. but nothing about scoring or a shot creator. This team has been terrible at shooting the rock especially from the perimeter and its a iso 3 ball league, no one plays defense or really runs an offense. This franchise does not do well with developing players either. I've seen too many guys take huge leaps once they were away from Charlotte which is concerning. And even more concering that they're taking developmental guys when they have no business doing so. So, All that to say take a proven scorer, high basketball IQ guy, a unpolished player will not survive here.
