When the time comes, will Cam Newton be the highest paid QB in the game?

And was a ridiculously high number to pay a rookie when they could easily be Jamarcuss Russell or Ryan Leaf.

The new CBA cured this problem, rokie players must now earn massive contracts.

Get to work Cam. We all want to see him succeed, win playoff games and reap the rewards on and off the field.

No doubt...earn it, and some current Panthers were paid very well after earning it. The new CBA rules are working like a charm for us with the first #1 pick to qualify for the contract rules. With the franchise tag available, lots of options for years to come on the financial side.

I honestly think Cam would take a medium-sized deal (for a franchise QB, that is) so we'd have more money to put more talent on the team. But I don't know.

pretty much

expanding on this point, the real question is, does he want to be the highest paid player in the league or is he willing to settle to be the highest paid player just on the roster. Even if he "settles" for the latter he's still pretty much set for life.

He would be dumb to do so.

He's likely to get 3 contracts in his life. His rookie contract, which he has no control over and was set by a wage scale; his final contract/extension when his skills begin diminishing and he won't command as much money; and his second contract which will be a long term deal covering the entire prime of his career.

If he turns into one of the greatest QB's of all time he might get a manning like epic money contract extension in his mid 30s, but he can't count on that.

His next one won't be that big, but his 3rd may well be, assuming he does keep improving year-to-year.

I think he will keep it reasonable though. I think he and his agent both realize they can't ask for too much. In order to win and be successful, you have to have great players around you. Great players require good contracts. He won't take a pay cut, but he will get his fair share while leaving enough for some good talent on both sides of the ball to support him. Cam just wants to win. If you tell him "we'll make you a top 3 QB salary wise and we'll put nothing but talented winners around you" I am sure he will be quick to sign the damn contract and get on the field. The guy wants to be the best. Making the most money doesn't make you the best. Look at Chris Johnson.

Waaaaaayyyy too early to know.

He looked great this year, but the phrase "sophomore slump" exists for a reason.

If he continues improving? Then yeah it's possible, but that's utterly unpredictable right now.

And if you think "nothing can go wrong" think again :(
