Any UNC fans care to give an analysis on Coples?

He has never really intrigued me thus far but after hearing that he looked great at the senior bowl weigh in, and then seeing a little bit of tape, he could definitely end up being the best defensive player available.

I'd just like to hear more about him from a fans perspective.

He's the most physically gifted DL prospect in this draft, he's got above average speed, great lateral quickness and a good first step or initial burst. The things that stand out the most are how big he actually is and how strong he is. He's an ox. He's got the frame to add more weight to play DT (if needed), he's an ideal DL player as he can play all four spots well. Would probably be best in the NFL as either a 3-4 end, DT or LDE. The biggest question marks are about his heart (does he actually want to be the best....ext..) There's also some rumors that he took the year off and attempted not to get hurt during the college season (his drop in stats might suggest that.)

The dude sounds like Peppers. Even went to the same school.

He's not the same as Peppers. Peppers was a freak in a different way. Peppers weighed in the 260-270 range and was running in the 4.5's while at UNC. Coples isn't nearly that fast (4.7ish) but still has a good first step. Coples biggest strength is his strength.

I'm watching him closely at the Senior bowl. If he looks good in the Senior bowl and does well at the combine, I'd take him. He measured in at 6-5 3/4 281 lbs, good for a LDE. He's a strong guy, I'd love to see him pack on some muscle and get closer to 300, I think he'd be a fantastic DT. I'm also concerned about his heart, but it seems like the Butch Davis firing took the fight out of a lot of players. I just need to see more from him before I decide.

Coming from someone who watched all the UNC games, this would be the most disappointing pick I could think of. It doesn't matter what kind of potential he has, the dude doesn't play hard. He had 7.5 sacks all year and 4 of them came against James Madison and Duke. Most of the games he was a no show.

Plus, he showed up at the Senior Bowl 5 pounds lighter than his listed weight. Sounds like someone trying to show he can stay at DE to me, not someone wanting to move to DT.

not a UNC fan but i dont understand why all the UNC fans are down on him. he didnt have 10( had 8 this year i believe) sacks but still produced. he was doubled at times, and sometimes he had sacks called off on penalties. Vtech and Clemson he had his biggest game i thought. the talent is there, Rivera could probably get the most out of him.

He's got the same concerns that Peppers had coming out without anywhere near the positives.

Peppers is faster and a bit more athletic, while Coples is strong as hell. Don't let Coples lack of 4.5/4.6 speed fool you, he's more athletic then most give him credit for. They both had/have tons of upside coming out of UNC. There's a reason he is/was considered a top 5 prospect in this draft.

They have the same thing going for them if you ask scouts, when they want it, they are both impossible to block. My biggest concern is that he showed a lack of heart and effort showed this season that many attribute to the coaching situation and the injury to Carter.

    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
    • I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
