Why don't our players wear wristbands?

I was listening to Cam's interview with Boomer Eiason and he said sometimes can't hear the entire plays, and has to call a timeout. I also noticed none of our defensive players have a playcall q-card either usually it was Jon Beason who'd wear it but this year it would have been Anderson.

Why is that? Does Rivera perfer his players memorize them?

Way to take that completey out of context and make Cam sound like a total idiot. You people wonder where the Falcon toolfans get most of the crap they spew.

It's like having an argument with CRA, you don't really have to say anything, because he'll typically make your argument for you.

i believe i heard cam wasn't allowed to wear one because they wanted to throw him into the fire to hurry up and mature as a leader in the huddle, instead of needing a piece of paper to help him out.

could be wrong. but wristbands do seem like a good idea.

All of our other quarterbacks have used wristbands in previous years. It was stated earlier in the year that the decision that Cam would not wear a wristband was so that he wouldn't use it as a crutch so that he would develope a better understanding of the offense.

I'm not sure the exact scenario or reason but this was mentioned before the season.. Rivera/Chud (maybe one, maybe both) didn't want wristbands used because they felt it was a crutch that kept Cam from learning the offense... I guess the idea behind that is so he would know the language in it's entirety..

edit: what Floppin said..

None of our defensive players don't wear a playcall q-card either like this one Beason that looks like a pouch.

Interesting, wonder if he'll have one this year since it's his second year an all.

they didn't want him to use it because they wanted him to learn/memorize it. if he has it, he'll use it and it becomes a crutch.

also, because he doesn't really need it.

There was little reason to expect that Newton's first game would be historic. He completed only 42% of his passes in the preseason and, says sixth-year center Ryan Kalil, "struggled early on, figuring everything out." Rivera and Chudzinski gambled by not allowing Newton to wear a wristband with the plays inscribed on it because they wanted him to hear the entire play called into his helmet receiver, which would get him more familiar with the language of the offense. (When, for instance, Tom Brady and Philip Rivers use a wristband, coordinators can shorten the play calls to a single two- or three-digit number, which the quarterback then matches to the play on his forearm.)

Newton was similarly impressive when former NFL quarterback Chris Weinke started training him during the lockout. On their first day together, Weinke drew 20 to 30 plays that he had gleaned from a playbook Carolina coaches had given Newton after drafting him. Weinke wanted to assess Newton's grasp of personnel groups and formations. What he learned was that Newton could answer every question he offered.

"Once he did that," Weinke said, "I knew his mental capacity was right where it needed to be."

Today Newton feels comfortable enough in Carolina's system that he doesn't even wear wristbands with plays written on them in games.

"You can see his comfort in everything from handling verbiage and calling plays to making adjustments at the line with protections," said offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. "We threw a lot at him early."

    • I truly do not understand why we rushed him back last season, we were a bad team with an already productive back in Chuba. Brooks looked like he was 60% back and clearly hadn’t regained full movement in his knee and confidence, no surprise he got reinjured. Shame on this training staff, look no further then Chuba returning too soon this season, I don’t care how bad a player wants to come back a training staff is there to protect them. Brooks is a great person and was an amazing player prior to both injuries, I hope he’s recovering well.
    • Brother thanks for sharing and all. Just for a 21 year army guy you sure over used your brain power on this interaction little too much...  Not that's Im taking a side or nothing, Ive never been a bully fan * in extreme deals bullying in needed..... I've heard from smart people in and around Panthers, Smitty needed Angie for guidance BADLY.  I've honestly thought if Smitty was born 20 years later, he should have taken a MMA path and not only would he have been a champion but a humbled good man with or without Angie helping him. He has never took off the enmoureous chip on his shoulder and it has branched off as a stick in arse over time too. Still everyone can not be or act the same with emotions, we are chemical sacks of water and bones. He reminds me of brain-washed individuals that can not turn off the switch. Plus he is high on thinking he's smarting than he is.......its a dangerous combo, but that's mainly what gave him the edge in life to live out the American dream......soooo I dare say change, but its sad at the same time. All those poor women that get involved with narcissistic disloyal men, one of the few times I agree to take what ever form them in court...
    • Completely agreed.  TBH, we have had so many great players that are in my favorite list, and I hate to narrow it down to one, but Cam is it.  Which is crazy, because you would think it would be more of the guys I grew up watching, but no.  Cam was the single most impactful player to ever out on a football uniform imo.  And like I said in an earlier post, I always felt a kinship with him in a lot of ways…  the way he was treated and judged for the off the field stuff in Florida and having to overcome all of that and fight show at back.  And although I am not a black man, I have always been welcomed by and accepted more by minorities, and thus, I know what it’s like to be judged by appearances rather than the content of your character and who you actually are.  I know what it’s like to be stereotyped and written off or mistreated for your mistakes.  I know what it’s like to be held to a different standard while your peers don’t have to meet that same standard.  So I always related to that.  And the way he came in and just electrified the whole franchise, man…  I still think about it often how much it sucks that because of how talented he was, our staff out so much on him and that ultimately cut his career short.  You’re right, there will never be another Cam…  I think Josh Allen is the closest thing we will see for a long time, but Allen is not the running threat Cam was.  Cam could run you over or around you.  That was THE absolute funnest time to watch our team ever.
