So what do we need to be worried about?

Prior to the start of 2008....we worried about having an offense with Jake attemtping to be the first QB to successfully comeback from Tommy John. Offense rolled overall through the regular season w/ Double Trouble and Smitty leading the league in rec yards per game.

Prior to the start of 2009.....we thought we could maintain and make another playoff run. Opposite was true.

Prior to the start of 2010......we thought we needed to be worried about defense as the offense would carry us. Opposite was true.

Prior to the start of 2011.....we thought we needed to be worried about getting enough offense as the D would be solid enough. Opposite was true.

So now this year, we look to be worried about getting enough D to aid the offense........we tend to be wrong.

If anyone thought we could maintain and make anohter playoff run in the 2009 offseason, they were fooling themselves. I doubt it was a majority of fans that thought that we could. And I highly doubt the majority thought the offense would carry us in 2010.

Jerry Richardson gave that thought process the green light. Gave Fox his team back.....paid Pep 1 million per game.

in 2010, based off Matt Moore's finish.....I don't recall this board worried about the offense that much in the offseason. Carolina stomped on people to finish 2009.

There was definitely a feeling that the progress at the end of 2009, with Moore warming up, would carry over.

There were many in 2009 that believed that season was doomed after we gave Delhomme an extension after the 2008 playoff disaster. A lot of people were questioning Moore in 2010.

well, I don't think many questioned the offense as much until preseason started. I think overall, before that, this board at least was somewhat comfortable w/ the offense.

and yeah, I am talking overall.....I do realize many wanted to dump Jake after 2008. Many saw it coming.

all I am saying......is let the D get healthy, make some moves, give Rivera (who IMO is better defensive mind than Fox) an offseason......and I could see this D rapdily improving.

I could also see a sophomore slump for Newton as possible. Turnovers will be huge area to watch.

Damn.. hit the nail on the head. I wanted to make a post like this a few weeks ago but decided to wait till training camp but pfft..you put it way better than I would have anyway.

My answer:

I am worried about offense reaching lofty expectations that are being put forth. TBH I think everyone here is expecting Cam in his second year to lead us to a top 3 offense. I'm hoping we don't regress or have a devastating injury (smitty or cam) that sets us back.

    • You could be right. I feel like if Bryce has a year basically the same as last year we're better off trading him because there are likely several teams that would be interested, despite what his naysayers on this forum will tell you. Not saying we'd get a 1st or 2nd rounder, but I feel confident some team would be willing to cough up a 3rd rounder for a former #1 overall QB that has shown at least some flashes.
    • Disagree. They weren't propping up the QB by improving the OG position coming off what we saw in 2023. They were addressing an obviously horrible position group that didn't allow them to even run the offense. Even drafting XL was an attempt to address an obviously horrible position group. Drafting Brooks was to address a position that consisted of Chuba Hubbard only. And we know catching has always been his Achilles heel. They were improving what they thought were the biggest weaknesses on the team. Who knew Derrick Brown would get injured in the first game of the season and the entire defense would fall apart.  And no one was coming in to Carolina and making them respectable those first 2 seasons. QB isn't played in a vacuum. That's why Brady left the Patriots and went to Tampa to win a Super Bowl. His coach was starting to give him the Cam treatment.
    • How long would Luke have played for us if he didn't get the concussions he did. Glad he got out before suffering any more brain damage, but damn I miss seeing him on the field
