Panthers surprise Cuts and Restructures?

I know there are surprise cuts every year, and this may not be a surprise to anyone but would there be a cap advantage to cutting Otah?

Also who has the highest cap hit heading into this year? They would be most likely to restructure..Thomas Davis obviously is going to have to make something happen, but i could see a guy like Gross helping the team out.

Otah is cheap and talented......and this is a contract year for him. Injury or not, he is an ideal player to have on your team for at least the 2012 season.

Davis, Wharton, Baker, Clausen are the obvious and easiest areas to work with. 3 of the 4 should be cut. Davis brought back for peanuts.

Also, Smitty could be extended to help with the cap. Stew's extension will probably be done at some point during the season. We have made it apparent. We will try at all costs not to let our own walk. Worst case, stew would get the franchise tag.

Any of the top money makers could get their contracts restructured.

Baker needs to be a definite cut.

Also, the Olindo signing is really hurting my head at the moment.

I can certainly see Wharton being a surprise cut, that's a good call..Although he gets paid for being able to slide over to LT if needed, and he is a very good Guard. They may feel like they could get better value starting Schwartz and spending the extra money on D.

well, he was the one of the 4 I don't think gets cut. Davis, Clausen, Baker should get the axe. They do need to rework Wharton though and if they can't then I could see them making a move there

Also just think about how much money we have tied up in the RB position. I love both Stewart and Deangelo, but Stewart is absolutely the better every down RB. Deangelo is a great RB though in his own right, and is a homerun threat every time he touches the ball, but he constantly gets stopped at the line. I dont know if there is a way to pay both these guys and keep the defense competitive.

Giving Williams that contract was a mistake.....the problems it created will become more obvious these next 2 seasons.

This is what makes players like Bell so valuable.

Anytime you can drag average or better performance out of someone making the minimum is so important with a capped league.

These players give the leverage and savings to pay the consistent, super talented players.

To have a great team, you need the Bells, so you can afford to keep the Smitty's.

However, finding and developing the Bells is the hard part.

    • This is gonna be longest six weeks ever
    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
