What I don't understand is that people keep bringing up the fact that Bama played man-to-man coverage the majority of the time. They're saying because of this he is good in man-to-man coverage. Just because someone comes from a certain system in college doesn't mean they are "good" at it. I mean Clausen played QB in college and look where he is now.

Regardless of what style they played, Dre is very good at playing with the ball in front of him. His tools translate more to zone.

that isn't a fact. they didn't run man a majority of the time. not sure where that is coming from.

Oh, I wouldn't know. I couldn't say with 100% certainty one way or the other.

I'm just saying people bring up that "he played man-to-man, so that means he's suited for man-to-man." Regardless of what they played, Dre is better suited for zone than man.

How do you figure, what makes him better in zone than man coverage? What is your basis for that?

I would say someone that is 6'1 3/8, 186 lbs running a 4.45 40 prob has the skills to both cover a guy running down the field/across the field which I've seen him do well on film... and locate an area of the field and play defense in that area. He can do both, and to say he is better suited to one type or the other seems silly.

From what I have seen (It was been two years since I've kept tabs on Dre):

He plays very well with the ball in front of him. He reacts and is very instinctive and diagnoses short passes, whether that's a screen pass or whatever. Also, he is physical so that's why he lays the wood so many times because he has the instincts to come and hit before the ball carrier has a chance to react. Those to me are his strong suits.

He does those things better than covering a man one one one. He can use his physical and long frame to play man press. But following and recovering after the initial beat, he could use some work. Not saying he can't play man but that just isn't a strong suit from what I have seen. He has all the physical tools in the world but for a cover guy man to man, he could still use some work.

(Not saying this happens all the time and realize it's just one play, just an example of man coverage. Notice how he tries to press:)

That's why there was a disclaimer there.

But again, I have seen Dre play (almost guarantee more than you have) and it's something that'll need work.

I've gone back almost two years, not coaches film, but watched him isolated, and I feel like he'll do a fine job with guys, especially most teams #2.

    • Tools. If I hear that term used one more time I'm going to lose my damn mind.  "Tools" are meaningless if they cannot use them already. Stop looking for "tools" and find productive football players. Stop looking for combine freaks and look for guys that have produced at a high level already. Tools my ass.
