Stafford/Lions agree to terms

Dumbasses. They have worse need then QB.

Ehh, look at the Falcons, I mean the Lions have threats at WR, they just need a Runningback and a OLine and a DLine and some corners and some linebackers and a coach and a tight end.

Look for them as a sleeper team.

I tell this to everyone with your problem. The NFL is a growing franchise, the cap is getting higher and may even be non-existent next year. The only reason the vets don't all get the same money is because their contracts aren't redone every year. A number's only as big as it is in comparison to other numbers. Due to the expected growth of the NFL, these numbers will get bigger and as long as the wages are proportional to the growth, it's fine.

detroit had a chance to start fresh and proved why they are always in the top 10 in the draft and still never make it out of the toilet.

stupid team does stupid things.

Are you commenting on the specific pick of Stafford, or the contract amount and term. IF it's the former, then there would be plenty of people who would have said the exact same thing if Detroit let Stafford go elsewhere.

The new FO in Motown obviously believes in Matt Stafford. I am going on record to say that Stafford is going to give them solid play, and that Stafford is going to become a top 10 QB within the next 3 years (as long as he gets the protection). Stafford will be the catalyst of their fresh start, and will foster in a new team culture.

Now, of course the contract can be deemed as a concern, but Detroit is just playing the lot that it was given. NFL contracts (and, indeed, most professional sports contracts) can be argued to be insane, regardless if they are rookie contracts. That being said, the genie has been out of the bottle for years, and the very least that the NFL can do is try to make the nonsense a little less nonsensical by attempting to cap rookies.

The Lions' problems were largely a result of management and coaching. It's too early in the game to genuinely brand their new FO

as a band of inept idiots. Some may disagree, but they know football better than people on this forum.

It's hard to be a good QB when you don't have an Oline in front of you. That was a bigger need for them and if they don't fix it this kid is going to end up looking like Carr in Houston.

I was thinking that same thing, but Stafford is no white glove wearing wuss. He is tougher, and has a stronger game. If not this year, next year the Lions can begin to address that specific issue.

Ummm didn't Stafford pass for less than 60% in college?

Isn't he a Junior?

Does he have a super arm?

Is he going to have the weight of a franchise on his back?

Does this sound like Ryan Leaf to anyone?

Now I am not saying that he will end up anything like Leaf, but the pieces are there for him to fail....sorry, but they are.

Should have taken an OL, and start the reconstruction there.

funny- all you talk about is OUR need at QB, and they went 0-16.........

Thats because White can sit behind Jake for a year. I am in the corner that you dont take a QB to be a starter his first year. Yeah Falco and Matt Ryan did good last year but usually first round QB's take time to be starters.

Shane was awful in that bowl game, but he redeemed himself in Washington...

    • Nothing wrong with starting to look for bodies early. It's a long injury filled season. I doubt we get through unscathed.
    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
