while i would agree DL as a whole needs to improve greatly, I think the secondary is in need of much more help than the line. I know everything starts with an effective pass rush....but lets get serious for a second, who really wants Munnerlyn, Butler, Stanford, Hogan and whatever other scrub we have on the roster vying for #2 CB. if mo claiborne is available, we just plain HAVE to take him. christ, hardy was a 6th round pick and I'd probably equate him to any rookie DE in this draft in the 1st. I think we can hold off in the 1st on DL and take a more sure-fire need. If every team in our division was built like us, run stopping DL would be priority #1 but we just plain got abused through the air last year for a reason....CB and S were just plain bush league

I agree, we need a CB - a #2 CB more than we need a DT.

Why not give our young DTs time to develop before calling bust? It's not like drafting a DT in the first round means it going to be an instant fix. I'd be more comfortable with a FA DT and a DT in the second round or later.

they are far from actually proving themselves worthy enough that serious competition should not be brought in immed. And no it's not really high on the list of priorities to wait years for mid round defensive tackles to get playing time just so we can "wait and see" if they will ever end up looking like they're not on skates most of the time. I don't know many successful teams that religiously follow that model.

DT is also one of the least invested positions on the team for your edification, iunno just thought I should point that out while there's like over $53 million invested in the running back position, and it's obvious the lack of talent brought in when you watch the games

Why not give Clausen time to develop?

Because he sucks and the draft offers upgrades.

Fua was the DT equivalent of Clausen last year.

basically you could find a lot of similarities in the OP with an argument that someone could've easily come up with against drafting Cam last year

Drafted multiple DTs in 2011? Drafted multiple QBs in 2010. Replace the other guys with Matt Moore and Brian St. Pierre. What we've been through at DT last year was the same ailment that afflicted QB in 2010.

I'm sorry but where exactly did you get the idea that DTs can fully develop in one year or that their true potential can be completely determined in such a short amount of time? That's not right.

Going with DT in the first would be like saying we fuged up on two 3rd round picks in one draft only one year after it happened. One year. You really think Hurney would admit to screwing up that hard so soon?

Pretty sure Mclain was worse than Fua btw.

knowing when and when to not cut your losses when it comes to a player you've invested that hasn't panned out isn't a bad thing at all. If Hurney truly was influenced by forcing himself to restrain from reneging on a move he thinks obviously isn't working out Everette Brown would still be here.

I think part of the problem is that everybody assumes Rivera can just maximize anyone's potential on defense so that just means we can skimp on talent. This is way too simplistic and narrow a perspective and another huge part of being a good coach is knowing who is and who is just not good enough to hack it in this league. Neither of the DTs we drafted gave a real convincing effort that they're going to turn into solid pros, and if they did, Hurney wouldn't be dispatching his scouts and sending invites to observe nearly every single top DT prospect in this draft.

Cutting Clausen doesn't make a ton of sense. It would free up something like $900k in cap space. What kind of qb do you plan on signing for that? Oh you think you're gonna find the next Randy Fasani in the 5th round? I rather get special teams help with a pick this year.

I could honestly see the Panthers skip DT if they don't feel like any one guy is special. Ron Ewards became an all pro DT after his injury and Marty hates to give up on players. I could see him selling us on Ron Edwards coming back and Fua/Mclain being a year better.

I'm all about drafting a corner because at the end of the day Fua and Mclain are 6' 300lb and Captain Munnerlyn is shorter than my sister.

Ron Edwards never went all-pro in his career
