Panthers Targeting Receiver In 1St Round?

Panthers targeting receiver in 1st round?

panthers.jpgMost mock drafts have the Carolina Panthers matched up with a defensive lineman in the 1st round, but their recent pre-draft visits may indicate another strategy.

Visits don’t necessarily translate to genuine interest in a player but when teams take a closer look at multiple players at the same position, that’s usually a good indication of where their interests lie.

The Panthers have already arranged visits with Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd and Kendall Wright – the only three consensus 1st-round receivers.

This certainly doesn’t mean the Panthers are locked in to this approach – they’ve also visited two two potential top-10 defensive linemen – but it does indicate they’re at least entertaining the idea of upgrading the talent around Cam Newton.

Personally, I think it would be a wise choice. After spending two 3rd-round picks on defensive tackles in 2011, there’s no need to bring in another rookie so soon. This is Cam Newton’s team, and they would be wise to give him all the support he needs to flourish.

The Panthers have enough receiving talent on the team. I'm pretty certain they won't take a receiver in the first this year. Maybe next year, but not this year. If anything we may get one in a later round.

Take Steve Smith away, Where's the talent? Not trying to be an a-hole. But if smitty is gone, What do we have? LaFell is a decent #2-3. Gettis is the same with the potential to be a #1, but the jury is out on him too. Pilares, Edwards, Adams, Arijotutu, who else? If smith is gone, Olsen would be our #1 Target, it would be like the old Wesly Walls era.

I'm slowly but surely accepting the notion of picking a WR in the first.

The problem with your hypothetical is that you don't take Steve Smith away. He's still on our team. You can't draft in the 1st round as a backup plan in case someone gets hurt or something unless you're set at the other positions. That's part of the reason I'm so against Kuechly in the 1st. Now if we took Blackmon in the 1st, or Floyd after a trade down, I wouldn't be upset like if we took Kuechly because we DO need WRs for the near future (unlike LB, we don't have a young elite WR) but since Steve ain't going anywhere for at least this year our receiving corps is acceptable. We got other spots that aren't acceptable, like D-line and CB.

Basically, WR isn't a need yet but I wouldn't be upset if that's the direction we took because it won't be long til it is a need.

This Hypothetical can happen. It's happened before. When Smith went down. We didn't have anyone. Besides, who's to say that Floyd won't indeed take the #1 spot away from Smith? There's a possibility of that happening. You can't put all your eggs in the Smith basket forever. I agree there are other needs, but if Floyd is there and all the other players that were worth a 9 are gone, what then? We don't know the Panthers Board yet. For all we know, this is the pick they are wanting to make. It's all speculation.

    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
