Indonesia Issues Tsunami Warning After 8.9 Quake

It's not the kind of earthquake that's likely to produce a big tsunami. The movement was horizontal, so no water is being displaced. In the big tsunami in 2004, the movement was vertical, so it lifted the water above it.

That may be wrong, I just read it elsewhere.

I read on yahoo that some people reported that water receded and everyone is going for higher grounds. That 8.2 is a aftershock. Aftershocks can going on for days.

I haven't seen any reports other than there is a tsunami warning issued... A quake of that magnitude will probably generate some tsunami even if its mostly horizontal motion.

I read it was a watch, not a warning.

OK, one site is saying watch, another is saying warning.

Haven't heard anything else about this... I would assume that if there had been a decent sized tsunami it would have at least hit Malyasia and Thailand by now...
