Clark Judge Finally Admits Panthers Made Right Choice With Cam

The Carolina Panthers did a smart thing Tuesday by locking down wide receiver Steve Smith for another three years. But they did a smarter thing a year ago when they stuck to their convictions and chose Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the first pick of the NFL Draft.

Basically, the Panthers followed one of the draft's most important tenets, which is to be true to yourself -- even if it means making an unpopular or controversial decision. The Panthers were, and look where it has them now.

On the road to recovery.

While Newton's choice was popular with Carolina fans, it wasn't the safest one out there. Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus or LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson were less risky, but you don't put people in seats with a defensive tackle or a cornerback. You put them there with a quarterback who is talented, who is creative and who can win.

The article also goes into great detail on why Hurney should get way more credit on this board: when everyone around Marty was telling him to stay away from Cam he doubled down on his homework and trusted his own intuition instead.

    • This guy pre-draft was saying he could take or leave football, and he seems to have been playing with that mentality ever since lol.
    • Agreed, another safety would be nice. Bud Clark, TCU, is one I would like to see us take a flyer on later in the draft, if he stays healthy and we don't take someone earlier. I just really hope we draft a solid C this year. Tired of seeing us cycle through average to below average players in that area.
    • Bryce doesn't like throwing into the middle of the field unless the play broke down or it's set up to give him a passing lane.  So because of this issue, most of the passing offense has to be outside the numbers towards the boundary. So you see him throw a lot of dump offs, swing routes, short side out routes, comebacks or deep balls outside the numbers using the boundary as protection of an interception.    Pretty easy for a NFL defense to see this and scheme against it.  All you have to do is run a shell cover 2 deep dime, LB plays a hook underneath, take the flat away with a blitz/flat zone option for the two inside DB's, outside two DB's play hook zone underneath and carry anything deep.    Pretty much what NO ran to take away Rico while also limiting What Bryce can do as well.
