Observer/person: Pick Is Blackmon Or Defense

Couple of interesting nuggets in here:

This year their first-round focus is on defense – unless Oklahoma State wideout Justin Blackmon falls into their laps. If that happens, the Panthers will add another weapon to quarterback Cam Newton’s arsenal.

Most draft experts don’t see Blackmon sliding past St. Louis at No. 6. But if Blackmon were to slip to 9, where the Panthers pick after losing a coin flip to Miami, look for general manager Marty Hurney to grab him and worry about the defense in subsequent rounds.

...Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, the nation’s top tackler the past two seasons...could be the pick if Coples is off the board or the Panthers decide against him.

Claiborne is expected to be gone when the Panthers pick ninth. They met with South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore, the second-rated corner, but don’t view him as a top-10 pick, according to league sources.

Do the Panthers really think that poorly of Cox

Their reasoning probably revolves around DE being a more valuable position (greater impact) than DT. There is no doubt Coples would be better at DE than Cox (should they envision using him there occasionally) and Coples may be close to Cox on the occasions he moves inside.

No matter what, we are likely going to be a bit thin at either DE or 3 technique post-draft and may need to add someone after June 1st.

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
