Did We Get Hurney'd?

Is it possible that Kuechley was drafted because he was the absolute safest pick at that position? The pick can be somewhat justified versus gambling on the DT, DE, or CB available. I still think we could've traded down with the Jets who could've got someone they wanted at that point and got Kuchley later.

The Eagles were going to take Kuechly if he had made it to them. Yes, ahead of Cox.

I didn't like the pick at first and still kind of don't like it for various reasons but you HAVE to give it to Hurney, he picked the best LB in the draft and we can pretty much bank that we just drafted a guy that could start (And do it WELL) if asked to. I would have gambled and drafted Fletcher were I in Hurney's position, but he did what he said he was going to do and got a player than can make an impact from day one.

I think it was a great pick up. He can run with TEs and in the NFCS you have 2 great ones and Winslow II.

As a falcons fan, I'm not looking forward to having to account for this guy twice a year.

Great football player, highly intelligent, excellent in the community.

All around a great pick, IMHO.

I think it's riskier than you're giving him credit for.

If we draft Jenkins, potentially the best CB in the draft, that's two top 10 defensive talents we picked up in two rounds. It's a dice roll but if Jenkins is available and we're willing to give him a shot, there's a chance we come out of the draft with the best LB and CB.

That might not be their plan though so hell if I know.

You're implying that Rivera has no input at all. Rivera liked Kuechly. We got Kuechly.

Man, I hate when we draft players that we want. It ruins my hype.

There is only one draft that I think was totally Hurney: 2010. People dont have the guts enough to call out Ron for his input on this pick, so they just blame Hurney out of laziness and of course, fear.

My only issue with the pick is that even though this solidified our Pass Defense a bit more because Kuechly has the potential to be the best coverage LB in the league, he doesn't have that killer instinct, hard hitting run stopper reputation, which is our biggest need whether its a d-lineman or a LB.

Either way though, this pick added immediate impact to the team and it's very clear that RR and McDermott has a plan for this defense and our LB core is very dynamic now and will be used in many different ways.

Now we can have packages where multiple LBs can be blitzed without having to worry about losing TEs down the field.

That was an ugly draft. LaFell has turned into a clutch receiver a la Manningham and hopefully Gettis will return to his breakout rookie form. Hardy is meh. Not bad but not great. Other than those three players that draft was arguably the worst in franchise history, definitely the worst in the Hurney era.

I agree, but my main point was to say that the coaches also have input into the selections, including this one. I just don't know why some people ignore that and put this all on Hurney. If you could go back to the 2010 presser, you could see Fox didn't want to have anything to do with the questions he was asked. But these last two drafts, I would guarantee that Ron gave his two cents worth.

Ive had a Buffalo Bills fan tell me today how upset he was that we took Kuechly. Said he was going to be an absolute stud in the NFL.

Ive also had a few Tampa Bay fans tell me how they wish they would have gotten Kuechly over Barron.

Take it for what its worth, but seems most of the people are saying great things about Kuechly with the rest saying it was a bad pick bc it wasnt a position of need(which in fact it was).

    • I think you should see the OP for pretty big reasons why that is a completely incorrect take given this is a Dave Canales team.
    • TMac is a good player and would've been the right pick if our QB could throw a ball farther than 40 yards. For this team's current build (run first, game management passing attack) and the fact that our TE's are laughably bad - the five on our roster have combined for less than 600 yards total, with 3 TDs - Warren should've been the pick.
    • If anyone feels like they can't have a conversation about Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career maybe assess why and how these conversations end this way instead of looking to shoot the messenger. Why is it okay to label anyone else on the team or coaching staff trash? Folks on the huddle and across the fanbase on social media have fully thrown anyone and everyone including rookie 8th overall pick TMac fully under the bus multiple times this season. But some of you guys apparently expect a pat on the back because Bryce Young successfully evaded a few potential sacks while Tyler Shough got consumed by our pass rush throughout the game and still had a superior performance. The state of this division is hilariously mediocre at best. Bryce Young is the only player on this roster who is allowed to have the lowest bar possible yet we have invested the most resources in him. It's lunacy.
