Hurney Remains Adamant That We Are Fine At Dt (Bottom Line Interview)

We only have so many high-round picks. You guys can't honestly expect us to have a high-rounder at each position. You guys keep looking over our DT depth simply because they're young or because they're old. You guys don't want us to develop players, nor do you want us to rely on players with experience. Well, what do you want? High-rounders are not magic and they're not automatic. Any player we would have drafted would still need several seasons to develop, especially in this draft. Players don't need to be drafted high to warrant spending time developing them.

I'm glad you guys don't run the team because we would have needs at 9+ positions going into each year's draft because you guys don't have the patience to let our young players develop and would be giving up on players after 1 or 2 seasons for not having a pro bowl appearance. Just because it's Rivera's second season already, we're no longer going to give him the benefit of the doubt? We're honestly already going to start throwing the word "stubborn" around? You guys don't even have the patience to let our HC develop this team for longer than one season.

what would your fool proof solution be this year?

There are no fool proof solutions but i like what the Eagles did. They picked up a great DT prospect, a pass rusher and a fast underrated linebacker from Cal. But of couse they don't have the hole a cornerback the Panthers have. I know Carolina is against the cap but thats their own fault for resigning DeAngelo and not one of the better CB's last season.

I would follow the Giants blueprint. They won two Superbowls with pressure pressure pressure and playmakers all along the defensive line.

if I may, I am going to drag this convo into a better thread that may or may not address this issue...

If the FO thought that we had a real need for a DT and wasn't high enough on any player in the draft, they had the opportunity to sign Shaun Rogers who the Giants just signed or even that Hartsville SC guy, what's his name..oh yeah..Haynesworth.

I don't know why people think Hurney is doing anything but reiterating why they didn't take a tackle in the draft in the first 7 rounds. They watched tape they talked and the concensus was that they didn't need to upgrade the position. So they didn't. They could have easily taken a DT from round 3 on down but why do that when you just drafted one in round 3 last year (really 1 slot out of the second round). As I said for the past month, either you take one in the first round or not at all. They chose not at all. If we struggle this year at DT, it will be an emphasis next year. But until then it makes no sense to draft someone who might not even make the squad.

What bothered me most about the post (I didn't check the link) is that they didn't point out how well Shirley played. Shirley & Kearse seem to have more upside than the 2 drafted rookies from last year; I still have hope for McClain, not so much for Fua.

Shirley showed some great ability to pressure the passer, and Kearse did great too. McClain will probably develop the most, but he and Fua are different kinds of players: Fua's more a space-eater meant to take up blockers, which is a necessary piece to have.

carolina isn't against the cap. we're something like $5.8 million under according to yasinskas with an additional $3.8 million due to be freed up on june 1st when wharton's cap hit comes off the books. we'll be almost $10 million under a month from now which should have us barely trailing tampa for the most cap space in the division. not bad.
