Cam is 95, Gamble is 101, and Smitty is 42

42. Steve Smith, WR, Carolina Panthers

As bad as the Panthers’ quarterback play was in 2010, Smith himself didn’t help matters with a year that suggested he could be on the decline. He halted those fears with a stellar 2011 where he finished fifth in the league in receiving yards, second among receivers in forced missed tackles, and seventh in yards after the catch. His ability to go deep (14 receptions for 538 yards) was crucial to Carolina and Cam Newton moving in the right direction.

Best Performance: Week 4 at Chicago (+3.8)

Key Stat:

Caught 62.2% of passes thrown to him at 17.6 yards a pop.

101. Chris Gamble, CB, Carolina Panthers

A real bounce back year for Gamble as the cornerback was able to find the form that deserted him a season earlier. He showed his class with a string of good performances that saw him allow just 27 receptions for 338 yards whilst he was in primary coverage all year. Those kinds of numbers should let you know teams shied away from throwing at him, and when they did, they got little joy with quarterbacks picking up a 53.3 QB rating in his coverage.

Best Performance: Week 15 at Houston (+3.5)

]Key Stat: Gave up just 0.68 yards per route in coverage. The third lowest of all cornerbacks in the league.

95. Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers

While we weren’t always sold on his passing (-9.4) Newton brought so much more to the table than just that, as evidenced by his +8.3overall rating, the number of records he broke, and how he re-energized a franchise that seemingly was going nowhere. Will occasionally throw the odd ball that makes you question his sanity, but stood up and made so many plays we couldn’t leave him off the list.

Best Performance: Week 4 at Chicago (+5.6)

Key Stat:

Ran the ball for 14 touchdowns, breaking 19 tackles in the process. That was the same number of tackles broken as DeAngelo Williams, Michael Bush, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Though the game against Houston wasn't his best stat wise, I think it was his best game, not jut for him but the whole team, considering the competition.

The games against the Bucs were great but the Bucs were AWFUL.

I respectfully don't agree, Steve was.

smith actually had a respectable QB to throw to him

but it's nowhere near a knock on smith to say Gamble played better. The guy dealt with zero pass rush most of the time and still blanketed his receivers

      I think Bryce balls out again and the Panthers win in a close one.  Panthers will have a defender shadow CMC the whole game so I expect he'll be contained to under 100 yards.

      yeah, Steve was basically like on any actual topic that approached his flaws/problems.....89 went with the long winded, try to sound like a wise man strategy of just basically just pleading the 5th (and sprinkling in the idea that others could of been wrong or wrong too).   also, in terms of the assaults and stuff like that....it feels like old 89, I feel has sort of forgotten his well-documented confessions and apologies about that aspect and era of his and was trying to re-write his story/image in hindsight.   And in all honesty, it seemed like a PR move on the twitter/cheating stuff also attempting to play himself as not the bad guy some think with the intentional vague suggestions. and the Pivot and all these athlete moves to basically take the reigns and power from traditional outlets exposes they have just as bad as flaws if not more often than the traditional media folks.  I mean I do like the free form long talk when dudes are telling stories but all this stuff is largely flawed and controlled PR often.

      Sadly, I agree and I’m a huge Melo fan. Might be time to ship him out. Don’t want to make the same mistakes the Pels did. They should’ve gotten rid of Zion two years ago.
