Steve Smith a Diva?

Recommended Posts

I think some people have no clue what a diva is.

i think most people have different definitions of a diva.

bunch of pouty whiny bitches who feel entitled to everything without having anything to contribute have skewed the definition.

Then there are tens of thousands of Diva fans as well. Who didn't bitch at Clausen, Fox, Hurney and Richardson in 2010. Smitty just said what everyone was thinking. I don't think that is a definition of a Diva.

Smith overall has spent a career pouting when the going gets tough....and he doesn't get the ball. Winning or losing doesn't seem to cause the pouting/bitching.

Terrell Owens isn't the only diva. You don't have to be TO to be a diva.

I mean if TO is the definition than there are very few divas

Every wide receiver wants the ball. Armanti Edwards was on the sideline last year thinking to himself "gimme the damn ball". You have to take it to another level to be a diva.

Cursing out teammates, coaches, pouting, me first attitude, not aiding younger guys at your position, etc

Nothing wrong with having a diva pending they don't take it too far.... But Smitty is a diva of us own kind

I guess you do have an idea what a diva is, you just don't know Steve Smith. His pouting has never seemed like "I'm not getting my stats" it's "I'm wide open, if Jimmy throws me the ball we score points. If Jimmy doesn't throw me the ball, he's throwing it at the feet of a LB and we don't score points." His tantrums have always seemed like disappointment in the team and other players' effort level, not for selfish reasons. I've never heard him say anything that sounds remotely selfish or diva-like. He is probably the least "me first" receiver in the league. He's all about the team and winning. This offseason for example, I haven't heard him talk about his great season or getting his stats, he's talked about Cam's progression and how the team can get better.

And from everything I've ever read and heard, he helps people that help themselves. He didn't go out of his way for Jarrett because he saw that he was lazy. I've read that he's tried to help others like Armanti and some others (Colbert I think, but might have been another). He just doesn't seem like the most approachable person on the team and that is probably a barrier. That's just a personality type, not being a diva.

Considering what Steve has dealt with I think his "pouting" has been very tame. TO played with Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, and Tony Romo. Steve Smith has played with Chris Wenke, Old Rodney Peete, Old Vinny T, Brian St. Pierre, Jimmy Clausen, Good Jake, Bad Jake, Matt Moore, Josh McCown, and of course AceBoogie. Steve has never had a Kris Jenkins like rant on sports center. He has made comments to media at appropriate times but he did most of his yelling were it belongs: in the locker room.

I think Smith has done a decent job of putting up with a career's worth of back up and rookie quarterbacks. His competitive fires burn bright and he definitely has anger issues. Still he has never reached his potential given who has been throwing the ball. BTW, one of the people they mentioned was a diva was Jerry Rice. I don't see with Rice and I don't see it with Smith.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
