Does anybody on this forum coach football?

I'm very curious to find people who actually coach football no matter if it's High school, Junior high, or Pop Warner? I just want you to explain how did you get your first chance to coach and what would be good routes to take if you have interest?

Started at the Pop Warner level when my son was 5 and just voluntered. I was given special teams for 5-6 yo's. Actually installed a reverse on kickoffs that everyone told me would never work. We scored 4 touchdowns on that reverse that year. I just kept moving up as my son aged and evnetually became a head coach of the 12 and up level. So my advice would be to volunteer at whatever level they need you and then show them what you can do. I even scouted opposing teams for the upper level teams when I was doing the little boys.

Just keep in mind the younger you go the less they know. I was reminded of that fact with the 6yo's when I kept telling one of our lineman to get up on the Line Of Scrimmage.He finally just looked at me and said "What's the Line of Skimmage?"

Find a solid high school program with a feeder system starting in 7 grade. The reason, most highly successful programs have a system. Rather than going thru trial and error with your unproven stuff. Work within a system that wins 80% or more of their games. In Alabama our last ten state 6-A championship teams, almost all had ties within the same coaching community. This will help you learn most importantly about fundraising and community development. Our local team in a relatively small town, probably raises more than 200,000 a year in local fundraising. Prattville is just 10 minutes outside of Montogmery, AL, and they raise more funds than all of the Montgomery High Schools combined.

I help coach little league, but couldn't offer any advice on how to get into it.

Thanks for all the posts. I'm a Junior at Shaw University in Raleigh. I don't know if it's possible or not but maybe I could volunteer for them since they have a really good football program. They won the CIAA the year before last and the girls won the National Championship in D-2 basketball this year. They're sports programs are good from what I notice.

Also, you could become a graduate assistant. Or become an accomplished NFL player and get an easy job afterward.

I'm a Junior at Shaw and my Major is still undecided. I wanted to get into the Physical education field but Shaw doesn't have that as a major. They only have Athletic Training and Parks and Recreation? Maybe I could major in that and go to graduate school and get certified?

I played high school football tore my ACL in my senior year in practice. So I when I graduated I figured A) I am a little small.. (I played CB) 5'10 165lbs and B) I was working at the school district and walked in and asked coach if I can help voluntier football and I mainly focused on the DBs and a year later I coached the Defense and had to leave simply cause I left the school district to work at a higher paying job and now looking to get back into coaching. Needless to say I helped coach a pretty good D, and I have that under my belt.

I knew a guy who was early 30's who said he needed an "in" with the Panthers to talk to them about becoming the defensive coordinator. I just looked at him like he was crazy and asked if he had coaching experience in the past. He said no but he knew every Madden defense inside and out and was sure he could wow them with his expertise.

The sad part is he was completely serious and really thought the Panthers would be interested in him.
