U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles and FBI Special Agent in Charge David A. Thomas announced Wednesday morning that hundreds of officers arrested approximately 20 individuals Wednesday after the return of a 91-count indictment charging members and associates with racketeering and racketeering conspiracy.

The arrest warrants were served along with the execution of 23 search warrants around 6 a.m. in North and South Carolina. During the operation, law enforcement seized methamphatamine, cocaine, marijuana, pills and approximately 100 firearms, including 2 automatic machine guns.

Prosecutors said in an 80-page indictment that members of this "criminal enterprise" engaged in money laundering, arson, and drug selling.

Federal authorities would not release exact locations of the raids. WIS confirmed that one of those raids happened in Gilbert on Summit Estates Ct. Agents on the scene would not comment, but there was significant damage to a mobile home on the property. Neighbors in that area reported being awakened by a loud blast in the early morning.

According to the indictment, The Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter of the Hells Angels had a support motorcycle club named the Red Devils Motorcycle Club (RDMC). The RDMC River City Chapter utilized a clubhouse at 5622 Highway 302 in West Columbia. Support clubs, according to prosecutors, are feeder clubs for the main Hells Angels chapters.

Those arrested were:

  • Daniel Eugene Bifield, a/k/a Diamond Dan (Leesville)
  • Somying Anderson, a/k/a Ying (West Columbia)
  • Bruce James Long, a/k/a Bruce-Bruce (West Columbia)
  • James Frederick Keach, Jr., a/k/a Big Fred (Pelion)
  • Lisa Ellen Bifield, a/k/a Lisa Ellen Meyers, Lisa Ellen Stockton (Leesville)
  • Trent Allen Brown (West Columbia)
  • Bruce Ranson Wilson, a/k/a Diesel (Swansea)
  • Mark William Baker, a/k/a Lightning (Lancaster)
  • David Channing Oiler, a/k/a Gravel Dave (Lancaster)
  • Richard Thrower, a/k/a Little Mark, Rat (Lancaster)
  • David Pryor, a/k/a Yard Owl (York)
  • Frank Enriquez, Jr., a/k/a Big Frank (Rock Hill)
  • Donald Boersma, a/k/a Brooklyn Donnie (Clover)
  • Johanna Looper, a/k/a JoJo (York)
  • Thomas McManus Plyler, a/k/a Uncle Tom (Rock Hill)
  • Jamie Hobbs Long (Lancaster)
  • Kerry Chitwood (Gastonia, North Carolina)
  • Carlos Hernandez (Charlotte, North Carolina)
  • Ronald Dean Byrum, Jr., a/k/a Big Ron (Gastonia, North Carolina)

"The significance of the extensive and long-term investigative efforts that resulted in the arrests today represent the FBI's continuing commitment to the dismantling of organized criminal organizations," said Thomas. "By working in a joint environment with federal, state and local counterparts, we send a clear message that such pervasive criminal activities will not be tolerated."

The arrests follow a two-year interagency investigation by the South Carolina Hells Angels Task Force (SCHATF). Assisting in the investigation and Wednesday's operation were the Federal Bureau of Investigation-Columbia and Charlotte Field Divisions, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Lexington County Sheriff's Department, Lexington Police Department, Rock Hill Police Department, York County Sheriff's Office, Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, State Law Enforcement Division, Gastonia, Police Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Gaston County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

A peek into the inner-workings of the Hells Angels

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A federal indictment released by the US Attorney's office Thursday details the inner-workings of what it takes to join or run a Hells Angels Motorcycle Club chapter.

The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club is an international organization with hundreds of chapters and thousands of members, according to federal prosecutors.

According to the group's website, the first Hells Angels Motorcycle Club was founded in California on March 17, 1948.

The Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter is one of several in South Carolina. Like each Hells Angels chapter, according to prosecutors, the Rock Hell Angels Chapter adhered to a hierarchical chain of command with a president, vice president, treasurer/secretary, and sergeant at arms/enforcer, as well as general members.

The Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter was founded in South Carolina under the leadership of Daniel Eugene Bifield, who was arrested in the Lexington County raid Wednesday. Prosecutors say the group operated as "God's Few," before being "patched over" into the it's current designation under the Hells Angels in 2008.

In order to be a member of the Hells Angels, one must be a white male and own at least two American-made motorcycles, preferably Harley-Davidsons, prosecutors said.

Full membership into the "Enterprise" is referred to as "full patch," in reference to each member's ability to wear the full Hells Angels three-piece jackets and vests, the indictment said. The full patch includes the club's emblem and wording that notes the territory being claimed by the member.

Members of the Hells Angels may also wear a diamond-shaped "one-percenter" patch which reflects the club's recognition that its members are among the one percent of non-law abiding outlaws, prosecutors said.

Much like a fraternity, prospective members are brought into chapters through a lengthy process designed to measure the person's commitment to the Hells Angels and to guard against law enforcement infiltration, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, after associating with the Hells Angels for a period of time, prospective members may be identified as a "hang-around" and may do menial tasks to gain the respect of the members.

After a period of time, these hang-arounds may be sponsored by a Hells Angel member and may then become a "prospect" for that chapter. While a prospective member, one must follow the orders of full-patched members and run various errands, according to prosecutors. This can include participation in legal and illegal activities.

Eventually the "prospect" may be allowed to become a full member, but that's only possible with a unanimous vote of all chapter members, the indictment stated.

Hells Angels who are not members, including members' girlfriends and wives, may wear the number 81 as in "Support 81." The numbers stand for the respective positions in the alphabet of H and A.

Like other Hells Angels chapters, the Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter paid dues and assessments to the national Hells Angels, prosecutors said. Money was raised locally from the sale of support gear at parties, including items such as T-shirts and stickers, according to the indictment. Funding from members was also used to create a legal defense fund to cover members' criminal legal fees, including, but not limited to, acts of violence, prosecutors said.

According to the indictment, funding for the Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter was also generated through illegal activities and kickbacks.

After its formation, the Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter began to "patch over" various Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Chapters into the Red Devils Motorcycle Club, which was a Hells Angels support club, according to the indictment. Support clubs support Hells Angels through attending various functions, taking orders from the Hells Angels and providing security for the chapters, prosecutors said.

The RDMC was required to pay a monthly assessment to the local Hell Angels chapter, the indictment stated.

If a member gets kicked out of a Hells Angels chapter, they are required to "outdate" or color-over tattoos which served as vestments of membership in Hells Angels, prosecutors said.

The Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter utilized clubhouses in Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and West Columbia.

Prosecutors said the Rock Hell City Nomad Chapter engaged in intimidation, extortion, narcotics distribution, money laundering, arson, trafficking in stolen goods, prostitution, and firearms trafficking.

Dear Mr. Spook,

Hello, you dont know me, but I am writing you to audition for the Hells Angels here in South Carolina. Since you are the only person whose name I know in the organization, I was hoping you could sponsor me as a prospect in the chapter. I know you are in prison right now, but I am sure you are still in great contact with the fellow members.

About me...

I am a white male in my late 20's.

I dont own a motorcycle, but I do own a Hybrid car.

As far as facial hair, I cant grow a beard, but I can grow a really mean Ron Burgundy style mustache.

I dont like country music or heavy metal, but I do listen to Hardcore Gangster rap when I am by myself.

I wear a tie to work.

I have only been in one fist fight in my life, and I was 8 years old and got beat up by a 10 yr old.

I have dont do drugs or participate in any illegal activities, never been arrested, as a matter of fact I have never even had a speeding ticket.

I went ahead and picked a "cool" nickname for myself....Hotsauce

Anyway, I will send you that carton of cigarettes in my next letter!

This happened right in my back yard. The Columbia Chapter's Club House is in West Columbia almost right accross the street from me. Most of them get their bikes worked on by the same guy who does mine. I see them all the time, and other than being crazy party animals, I have never seen any trouble with them.

They used to be big in my hometown of Hillsborough. They would take up the whole lot of the Dollar General store "downtown" on some weekends where there is a cruddy lil pool hall/bar. I think now they are big time in Durham. I actually know some of them and was friends with a couple of them in high school, but we parted ways due to a conflict of interests.
