Darrell Green at Mini-Camp Practice

Okay... I'm a longtime huddle reader and typical lurker but not much of a poster but I had to share this experience from Thursdays practice.

I unknowingly met Darrell Green.

I arrived at the stadium around 11:20 to find that the only available section was in the end zone and seats were filling fast. I just happened to notice 3 empty seats by the walkway on the top row.

I sat down and the guys on both sides of me were very friendly and receptive to my panther chatter. The guy to my left was especially interesting. He asked me if the panthers were any good this year and what they had going on. I thought that was unusual but I shared some thoughts with him. I think maybe he was trying to gauge the typical fan's thoughts and opinions of the team but I didn't know at the time.

Anyway, a little while later he asks me who is that guy down there, is he a Richardson? I looked over and saw Danny Morrison shaking hands and talking to the folks. I told him who the guy was and he jumps up to go over there and speak to him.

I turned back to the action and was watching the practice when he returned. I asked him if he spoke with Morrison and he said no. There were too many TV cameras and photographers and he didn't like them. I thought that was strange... Who is this guy?

A little later I notice Marty Hurney waving my way and this guy beside me was waving back and apparently carrying on some sort of communication.

Next thing I know he is up and walking towards Hurney and I never saw him again.

That is until I came home and find CatMan72's mini-camp post mentioning he saw Darrell Green. Then I found the images posted on the Observer site and that confirmed for me that it was Green that I was sitting beside.

Side note... I remember talking to DG and telling him that Captain Munnerlyn was a good CB but he was too short. LOL. Darrel Green was only 5'9" and must have thought I was an idiot.....

Anyway, I thought that was an interesting encounter.

I kind of want to know what exactly you told him about the team, so we can gauge if you are indeed an intellectual fan or just a Cam jock sniffer.

If it's him, I talked to him a lot thru the whole practice. Not a sniffer. He was on it about the whole team. not a lot of Cam talk.

Alvarez,

You must be the guy with the telephoto lens. Its a small world. No, I'm not a Cam Jock Sniffer. I have followed the Panthers thru good and bad since day 1. The Panthers are finally going to be viable now for awhile so I'm exited.

Ivan the Awesome,

I can't begin to remember what we talked about. Just small talk about the team.

I just remember him mentioning the CBs and my comment back to him about Captain.

I do remember Morrison coming by and shaking DG's hand and mine and being very open and friendly. As he started to walk away I said something like, "Keep Armanti" but he ignored me and kept on walking.... LOL

What did he say about the CB's? Did he mention any in particular?

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
