Cut Jimmy Clausen - Sign Troy Smith

This is not your typical obligatory FA signing thread. Troy Smith was just released by the Steelers. He more so fits the mold of Cam than Clausen ever will, oops never will. We can be developing Troy Smith this year at the #3 QB to be our #2 QB next year and going ahead. I don't think that Anderson is going to play too much longer, although it wouldn't be hard for what he's being asked to do, but Troy Smith is a better fit.

If we're talking ex-Steeler FAs, I'd rather have Dennis Dixon. I'm all for cutting Pickles though.

Hell, let's just cut Jimmy and roll with 2 QBs. Use the extra roster spot for Plax or Shock. If Cam goes down, we're screwed anyways.

I endorse this idea, though if I'm not mistaken Troy is younger and therefore cheaper than Dixon.

Eeeeh, maybe. I don't really know that Smith would stick either.

He's never really shown himself to be a pro level success anywhere and has had his fair share of chances. Just too short to be a successful pro, apparently.

He's one of the guys that I had hoped would succeed in the pros because Jim Tressel took the time to convert him from a running QB to a passer, but it just wasn't meant to be.

That said, there's no compelling reason to keep Clausen at this point.

    • Number 9  Carolina Panthers  Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, produced career highs in completion percentage (63.6%), passing yards per game (188.2) and passing touchdowns (23) in 2025. However, those numbers aren't exactly stellar by NFL quarterbacking standards. Even though the Panthers backdoored their way into the postseason in 2025 as NFC South champions with an 8-9 record, Young's performance was up-and-down. He threw for the third-fewest passing yards by a quarterback to make the playoffs in the last 20 seasons, per CBS Sports Research.  FEWEST PASSING YARDS BY QB TO REACH PLAYOFFS, LAST 20 SEASONS (MIN. 16 STARTS) PASSING YARDS PLAYOFF WINS 2012 Christian Ponder (MIN) 2,935 0 2008 Joe Flacco (BAL) 2,971 2 2025 Bryce Young (CAR) 3,011 0 2006 Steve McNair (BAL) 3,050 0 2019 Josh Allen (BUF) 3,089 0 Young did deliver some high highs, like when he threw for a franchise-record 448 yards passing in a Week 11 overtime win at the Atlanta Falcons and when he went toe-to-toe with Stafford in the playoffs in a 34-31 defeat.  Kenny Pickett couldn't win the Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition a year ago, and Will Grier is a career backup. • This is why we need the Bank of America Stadium Ballroom.
    • That thread has all the huddle legends either posting in it or mentioned in it. I remember everyone of those folks and I truly miss seeing them post here. This place was so much better with them here.
