Interesting Note On Cam's Biggest Flaw Last Year, And How He Will Likely Fix it In 2012

If games lasted two quarters instead of four, the Panthers would have fnished 14-2 and Newton would have been in the MVP discussion. Unfortunately, Newton played more like a rookie as games progressed. He had a quarterback rating of 101.2 in his first ten throws compared to a 74.4 rating on his 21st through 30th throws. Statistics showed that Newton was twice as likely to throw a touchdown pass in his first twenty pass attempts than in the rest of the game. He was also nearly twice as likely to throw an interception in his second twenty pass attempts than in his first twenty. Last season, in games where Newton was asked to throw the ball more than 30 times, the Panthers were 1-10. Statistics also show that Newton struggled when the game was close in the second half. He had a passer rating of 95.6 in the first half, but in the fourth quarter, when the Panthers were seven points or less behind, his passer rating was 68.6. This suggests physical and mental fatigue late in games which may lead to inability to adapt to adjustments by the defense.

“When you do your best to succeed on a particular play and it doesn’t happen- it affects me a lot and you see someone else mess up and they say—“I’ll get it the next play,” Newton said in an interview with ESPN The Magazine.

Are you serious?! You keep saying, “I’ll get it next time, and before you know it, it will be the end of the game.”

This attitude led to some of Newton’s second half woes in 2012. He would make a mistake, get frustrated and it would show in his sideline demeanor. He would sit on the bench by himself sulking with a towel over his head. This attitude wasn’t going to breed a lot of success in the NFL. “He was angry because he wanted to make every play,” said Steve Smith. The good news for the Carolina Panthers is that Cam Newton is working very hard on an attitude adjustment going into 2012.

Offense can really play as good as last year and if we have a defense to go with it, we are a postseason team. That is not saying Cam and the offense don't have work to do at all, but that there is no where to go but up.

Cam has plenty to improve on even with being one of the best in the NFL.

Examples:

1) Getting down on himself and letting it show

2) Releasing the ball quicker/recognition

3) Knowing when to take something off the ball

4) Eliminating leaving his feet to get that extra yard, i.e. windmilling

Regarding #3, Teeray made an excellent post on this a couple days ago. This is key to eliminating some of the overthrows.

If he can improve in these areas, he can quickly become the league's most dangerous player.

Sorry man but our defense IS the difference between a winning season (which is only technically 3 more wins btw), and IMO a postseason team.

Cam was playing catch up 3 quarters of almost every game, most times rushing his throws/calls, and got discouraged in some by the lack of defense, you could see it at the games.

A better defense means a more confident Cam and just a btter team all round. Don't even get me started on ST and Mare...

    • I definitely respect your opinion more than Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, and Carmelo Anthony (whom I just watched on their show, all saying NOBODY wants to get the Hornets in the post-season). You win.
    • For all the good feelings about Bryce Young, when you read between the lines, it's what DC says and doesn't say that makes us know that Bryce hasn't necessarily been the supercomputer that they thought he would be. This season, Bryce has to make a tangible progression on the field. "A big part of it is being able to operate at the line of scrimmage — not in the huddle — when we want to, and he’s certainly capable of that," Canales said about Young. "It’s not solely on him. It’s a group that’s pretty young. You have to trust all the guys to go up there, communicate verbally or nonverbally and execute what we’re doing. We’ve made huge strides in that regard. His ability to alter things based on what they’re giving you will give us another edge, which he’s continued to grow and had some great examples down the stretch where he identified things they were doing, got us to the right check and capitalized on some plays. Want to see him do that more when it’s appropriate. We don’t need to be changing things just to change it." The implications, perhaps insinuations, are pretty evident. Bryce is just going to have to do better. "And then for Bryce, it’s the identification of early on the cues that the defense are giving us, to be able to eliminate parts of your progression before the ball’s even snapped. That happens with time. I’ve seen quarterbacks really own and master, which allows them to play lightning fast." Obviously Bryce isn't necessarily picking things up as fast as Canales would like, and I can only assume that Canales is making comparisons to Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield. But, of course, not everyone picks things up at the same rate. Bryce's pace has left Canales wanting for more. During the coming season, I don't believe that it will be good enough for Bryce to start putting things together in December, evidence of the light switch being on is going to have to show itself in September. Basically, it's really the moment that we've all been waiting for, the one that we thought should've happened earlier, the one that brings Bryce's accountability in the spotlight. On an off note, perhaps to that end, we should consider the possible implications upon the draft, but that's another story. Basically, it's time for Bryce to sh¡t or get off the pot. https://roundtable.io/sports/nfl/panthers/news/carolina-panthers-dave-canales-holds-nothing-back-on-bryce-young-in-new-interview
