I'm not on this message board because I am a ring chaser. Obviously. Expecting a Super Bowl every year would be unrealistic, I get my share of thrills from the Panthers, but that doesn't mean I can't see any flaws with them.

I see flaws too. But I tend to think about costs and benefits of addressing each flaw. "Get a #2 corner" is easy to say. But from where? There aren't a bunch of guaranteed success stories with no flaws hanging out in the free agent pool begging to be signed. What if they watch film on the available players and decide none of them are worth the price or better than the guys they have on hand? Then the guy you want Hurney to sign becomes the free agent bust that proves to you that Hurney should be fired. Should the team have drafted a corner instead of Keuchly if they thought the CB wasn't as good a player but filled a bigger need? If they did that and the pick was a bust, would fans like you say "that's ok, I forgive Marty's drafting because he picked the guy I wanted him to"? I tend to think not, but again, it depends on your evaluation of the player. But this isn't baseball and we're not the Yankees, so every team is gonna have flaws, we can't just get every player we ever want. "Fire the GM" is a similar idea. Fine, but replace him with who? Unless Bill Belichick or Ozzie Newsome is secretly calling JR every night begging to come work for the Panthers I don't see how we can be so sure we'd be better off. I've learned it's a good idea to be careful about firing capable people unless you're sure you find a replacement that's an upgrade. Measured rationality may not be as much fun to express on the internet as frantic hyperbole, but it's a better way to run a football team, or any other company, in the real world

You are right Hurney shouldn't worry about fans like me. Hurney should be worrying about having 3 / 10 winning seasons and a below .500 regular season record. It really is that simple.

I'm sure he's worried about doing as much as he can to make the team better. Hurney has a pretty good reputation around the league. As far as the W/L record, fine, but a lot of people on this board were convinced that Fox was the worst coach in the world until we fired him, and now all those losses are suddenly Hurney's fault and not Fox's. Fact is, the GM doesn't control everything that goes on. There's always a little bit(or a lot) of luck. You never really know if a guy is gonna get hurt, or if a guy has something special that others haven't seen. Remember, Tom Brady was passed up by every team in the league 5 TIMES. Every GM, the good ones and the bad ones, had 5 shots at him and didn't take him. There's luck in this. What's the difference between Otah being a consistent Pro Bowler and a bust? A little bit of motivation that you can bet he pretended to have in pre-draft workouts? An imperceptible weakness in a knee ligament that wasn't apparent until it tore? And yet these are the things we judge NFL front offices by. But hey, sometimes a message board fan actually gets to buy a team and run it that way, firing people every few months, signing the big names and drafting the big stars all the time, running things Madden-style. That's called Dan Snyder and the Redskins.

Being logical around here is a very bad thing. It seems people just want to bitch about their pet peeves. So just think of this as an I can be a better GM or Coach or Owner or whatever group therapy session. The insane posters will stand out and will give you a chance to use the ignore feature.

I don't think people are overreacting. We have our first preseason game tomarrow and no #2. Even if all Shaun meant is competiition, it still sucks we have no one stepping out and seperating themselves. hopefully someone does before the season starts.
