Medlock signed on with the Toronto Argonauts in 2009 and converted 40 of 46 field goals with a long of 52 yards, one of the best seasons in league history. He didn’t kick much the following year, but last season signed with the Tiger-Cats and turned in another solid season converting 49 of 55 field goals, the longest coming from 57 yards.

He also doubled as the team’s punter, finishing with a net average of 41.6 yards.

Mare and Medlock both missed six field goals last season. The difference was Medlock made 27 more than Mare (22 of 28).

The Panthers took notice of his field goal accuracy — and length — and brought him in to push Mare, who struggled last season with two key late-game misses.

While the job appears to be Medlock’s — general manager Marty Hurney said there are no plans to bring in any other kickers — Medlock is not planning on building a house here in Charlotte.

In his eyes he hasn’t won anything yet.

“It’s not over yet,” Medlock said. “It’s the NFL and it’s a one-game tryout every game. It doesn’t matter if you sign a four-year deal or a one-year deal — it’s always a one-game tryout in this league.”

Is anyone else drooling over that 57 yard long? That means if we just get barely (3 yards) past midfield, we're in a position to put up points. That's like Janikowski status on an offense that years ahead of the Raiders.

Edit: Forgot about the yards needed for the kicker behind the LOS. We'll have to get to the ~42 then to get a 57 yard FG. Still pretty good. I could see us consistently putting up 4 TDs and 5 FGs in any given game.

A 57 yard field goal means he kicked it from the 40 yard line. You have to account for the 10 yards of end zone and to were the ball is kicked from, which is usually around 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage. an attempt from the 47 yard line would actually make it a 64 yard field goal attempt.

Ah, gotcha. The placeholder is usually 7 yards behind the line then? I did not know that. Still, getting 3 points from the 40 is not half bad.

He damn near killed his golfer girlfriend at UCLA in a DUI crash. So there's that to build on.

I'm sure he's learned from his mistakes. That's almost like bringing up Cam's laptop incident or Steve's fights with teammates.

It's in the past.

So stoked for Medlock. Great story and a solid kicker with loads of potential.

I really didn't want Mare on this team, you can't have a championship team with a guy like that, that nobody can believe in.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
