Clausen Has Improved

I know there's the usual caveats about third strings and underthrown balls and head-scratching plays, but the primary difference I saw in Clausen's play tonight and his play throughout the rest of his Panthers tenure is that he was being very decisive in his reads. I definitely think much of his issues this preseason stemmed from terrible line protection, but since the Steelers weren't rushing every other play Clausen didn't spend have the game on his back for a change.

He put a lot of underneath passes right in the receivers hands, and rarely used the check down (as his 9 for 19 line indicates.) His TD throw to green was a terrific strike, and he utilized Barnidge and Joe Jon Finley nicely on a few throws across the middle of the field. His TD throw to Bryant was almost all Bryant, however.

I was legitimately surprised. He's by no stretch a threat to Cam or Derek for that matter, as our vertical offense is a mismatch for his skills, but he could probably run a play-action dominated offense like Kansas City's to a decent degree.

I just want to know why he wouldnt throw to Smitty! Im glad he didnt because we got Cam due to him not throwing to 89. But why the hell was he scared to throw to Smitty in '10? I even remember before one game a shot of Smitty telling him throw the ball up and he would grab it.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
