Amini passed on the rusher, probably a formation fug up on his part.

Kalil got abused.

Hangman got hanged.

And Gross was grossly abused as well.

Ironically Bell was the only one that did his job, but I do agree that the play simply looked like it was an entire miscommunication and just not executed.

They looked awful as a whole yesterday, and that sucks to have to say :(

Gross has been declining a little each of the past few years. He's still plenty good, but he's on the downside of his career. He could pretty easily hit a wall here at some point, though I hope not.

Silatolu looked like a rookie from a small school, which shouldn't be a major surprise. Still plenty of upside there though.

Kalil is likely the best lineman we have at this point, though he can't do it by himself. And both he and Gross had to try and cover for Silatolu sometimes yesterday. That'll likely continue at least for a little while.

Hangartner? Even when he was at his best, I was never a big fan of him as a starter. His best role is as a utility backup for the interior. As a starter? He gets no push in the run game and does his best pass blocking by basically just getting in the way. hate to say it, but minus a huge imrovement next week, I've gotta call from him to go back to backup status.

And Bell? Love his effort, but would like him better playing inside.Course then you've gotta put someone else at right tackle. If I have to pick from what's on the team, I guess I go with Bruce "Ash" Campbell.

Overall...Oy :(

The way the offensive line played sunday. I like absolutely no one on it. Last year it was a sh*tty defensive line. This year it's this on offense. The game is won in the trenches on both sides of the ball. I don't care if we had 3 Steve Smith's on this team, with Walter Payton in the backfield. If we can't protect our QB, and open holes, we will not win many games. I don't know what the coaching staff is going to do but we have to do something, or it's going to be a long painful season. Fug our O-line right now...

So what's available as far as outside options?

Quick look at the scrap heap shows names like Chad Clifton, Tony Pashos, Kareem McKenzie, Stacy Andrews and Marcus McNeill. All guys who've had their moments but who are generally unemployed for a reason (mostly health concerns). Even if you pick them up and they play at a decent level, how long do they last?

Trade would be an idea, but to get something worth having you generally have to give up something that's worth keeping. On that front, there are a couple of older Carolina boys who have started in the past and might like the chance to start again but who are backups for now. I'm referring to Lumberton native Sean Locklear with the Giants and ECU alum Guy Whimper with the Jaguars.

I suppose you could also go for a guy still trying to prove themselves like Oniel Cousins (Browns) or Byron Stingily (Titans) but they might cost more to acquire. And to be honest, the whole idea seems unlikely anyway.

Ultimately, if there are any moves made, they'll probably just be shuffling guys we already have,

I've never liked Kalil as a pass blocker, and having a rookie from a small school beside him is making matters worse. Hangarter is probably the biggest problem because not only is he below average in pass blocking, he's also not strong enough to be all that effective in the run game either.

The season isn't lost yet (well duh), but we need to make a move quickly to fix some of the o-line problems. Silatolu needs to continue to start imo, and even though he's making mistakes he should improve each week with Gross and Kalil flanking him. Hangarter has maxed out his potential, and he simply doesn't have the power to start in the NFL and make an impact. He's simply out there taking a beating and not contributing much. I would bench Hangman, and replace him with OT Bruce Campbell. Even with some mental mistakes from Campbell, the sheer increase in size and strength alone is worth the change. We need more violence and power on the o-line. Here is BIG HEAVY Bruce Campbell:

After re-watching the game, Gross and Bell did a pretty good job. All of our interior linemen got beat pretty bad though. Even with all of that being said, the difference in the game, without a doubt, was that blocked punt.

I agree, most of the pressure was between the guards. As bad as the punt was, our horb oline put us in terrible second and longs all game. The punt was detrimental, but our defense put us in great positions the entire second half excluding the very last possession. Our goalline defense has been freaking stout. Our offense let us down and it begins with the oline.

    • I have no idea why you are so irrationally upset about the notion that going out and spending $150 million free agency dollars on two interior offensive linemen could be construed as a panic response after our #1 pick we traded a fortune for had one of the worst rookie seasons of the last 25 years. It is objectively what transpired. Dan Morgan as of right now is a mixed bag. Some really good some so so some not so good some bad some really bad. You take any rational criticism personally like you are related to him or something. That's something you'll have to figure out for yourself. Anyways. The predicament Dan Morgan finds himself in for this year will define his future as GM. I sincerely hope he navigates it to perfection. But the circumstances are largely of his own creation. And not just in his stint as GM but going back to his time as assistant GM. Which conveniently people like yourself don't like to talk about. That is the reality of the situation. I like how you will carry water for Dan Morgan to the point of getting into random spats with people but make no mention of Bryce Young's glaring limitations and shortcomings as a starting QB yet go out of your way to put the onus of our struggles squarely on Canales. I mean I've been quite critical of Canales too but he sure isn't the only one to blame for our problems.
    • They weren't well thought out. We needed one, not both. 2 top center/guard candidates were going to be available in the 2nd. We would have been fine with JPJ or Frazier. Drafting either over XL or Brooks would have made perfect sense. Hell, drafting both would have made sense even if we had signed Lewis or Hunt. Instead we drafted a 1 year wonder project WR and a luxury RB that we didn't need since we had Hubbard. Draft IOL, pay tackles. Plenty of 2nd round guards and centers start immediately and play very well. Those 2 picks were not good then, now, no matter how much explaining anyone tries to do. Several of called it then.
    • I have no problems with difference of opinions.  Difference of perspective.  Perspective is everything.   The statement you made was false. Period. So sorry that you don't like me calling it out.  Frankly, Frank,  I gave up on seeing anything eye to eye with you when I was a much younger man.  Nothing I said was a personal insult, so get over yourself.  As far as comparing rosters.  I just dont give a fug.  There are no 2 rosters in this league that are built the same as far talent and contracts. Every team is on their own journey.  Is our passing offense far from desired? Yes, we can agree on that part, but not on why it has struggled.  I wish we could easily just drsft all the talent we need, the the NFL doesn't,  and hasn't worked that way.  Dan Morgan did a fantastic job at bringing in talent along the line, and retaining talent along the line. We needed it also, as we used every bit of the depth we had, most of the season.  Unfortunately we were relying on a receivers room that their average age is less than my oldest son, and that is NEVER a recipe for success for the group.  The constant shuffle at online was horrible. Despite how horrible it was, our online actually performed well above expectations for what they went through.  We also need our play caller to attempt to stick to an offensive identity.   Unfortunately,  Dave C. didn't do that, for whatever reason.  Hell, the online was the highlight of our offense this season. Wished the rest of the offense performed as consistent.  He'll, wish our defense performed that consistent.  I'll give you credit, for not dropping to your expected behavior in your response.  Congratulations.  Have a goodnight.
