It Begins And Ends With The Defense

I'm not going to spend much time here, because this has been a shitty enough day and I'm ready to for it to end already, but the game was over the moment the defense let Andre Brown run wild. Jon Beason is not back to form, and his tackling has been terrible. Tackling is still a travesty on the entire defense, with Nakamura, Godfrey and more showing up as lowlights. Our coaching has failed in this area, from Rivera on down.

Cam played poorly, but that is the way it is when the other team's defense has free reign to come after you. Our offensive line is showing weakness, particularly from Hangartner.

Now, before everyone commits suicide, we still match up well enough to win games, but athletic defensive lines are going to be an massive Achilles heel. Luckily, we just played the best in the game and don't see them again this season.

These kinds of games happen. Teams either respond or collapse. We'll find out at Atlanta just how mentally tough this team is.

Yea and I think it goes right back to coaching. If you dont have the right coordinators your not going to be successful. Those are the guys teaching and watching the Film when a HC just cant do it. If I were Rivera I would take playcalling duties away from McDermott asap because he will never be good at it.

Yeah, but we know Rivera spends very little time with the O because of his faith in Chud, so I'm assuming he and McD are going over the game plan, discussing adjustments, etc. And if he isn't, then why not? Most head coaches spend considerable time on game plans on whatever side of the ball they are most comfortable with.

It's funny, but the assistant who is always talking with him is Murphy. I know Chud's in the box, but McDermott isn't. It is really puzzling.

Thats very true but TBH you never see many coaches talk with there OC or DC when the game is on. I really wish I saw Rivera with the Players more though. I really cant belive we though the same defense we used on the Saints would work on the Giants. Very dumb move on our part and in the NFL if your not moving forward your behind.

I think that after just three games this season, you could make a robust video montage of Nakamura's whiffs and pathetic failures of tackle attempts.

That guy is straight garbage.

Only reason he starts is bc if JR....Martin at least has talent. Martin would be ahead of him in the depth chart in another team.

    • I think you have to factor in that we're still not an attractive proposition for Head Coaches. You're not getting the cream of the crop if you fire Canales a year after winning the NFC South, especially considering the situation he walked into.
    • Yeah, I was about to say I hope he's doing okay health-wise because he's not looking good in that pic.
    • Honestly, I dont  think he should be on the hot seat yet. A bad start to next year, then yes. Despite our mistakes on play calling this past season, we played better than anticipated overall. Bryce showed improvement and maturity (although still not nowhere close to our expectations). Better record and 2-15 to 5-12 to 8-9. Despite what we feel the stats dont lie we are improving by 3 wins a year. Could 11-6 be our expectation. That's a high bar but at the rate we are going, thats what its looking like. We all want to see a 5-12 to a 13-4 record but we are methodically moving up. Success doesnt happen overnight (well in most cases).  IMO we are struggling mostly on the defensive end. LB and edge are our biggest weakness. I see Bryce making improvements (even though I was a Bryce hater) next year. Biggest concern is LT on offense. How to fix this? We need a big name edge or to trade up and get a big name edge or LB and pick up one in FA and draft one. Also if in the 3rd we can pick up a TE. Dont know if Sanders is the answer or Tremble (even though I love Trembles blocking and power after the catch). If these two can get their footwork together they would be great. Maybe all they need is a better TE coach. And if Brooks can stay healthy and be the back we thought he could be, man that would be great
