I would not mind having him as a DC, having one third of the responsibilities. Head coaching is just too much for him to handle.

But, technically Zod, it appears that he still only has 1/3 of the responsibilities even now as a HC. From pressers and comments he's made, it appears he gives the coordinators full autonomy in games, so all he is managing is timeouts and other situationals, but he doesn't oversee playcalling at all.

He seems to do a lot less than most HCs, so he shouldn't be making the mistakes he's making.

I hate that we were the team that decided to give him his chance considering 9 others didn't, and for good reason - he's in over his head.

He took the blame for playing soft coverage on the final drive, saying "I wanted to keep them in front of us". This seems to imply that he doesn't exactly give his coordinators exactly full autonomy.

You're right, I should've said 'up until this game.' Wouldn't you agree his comments post game prior to yesterday suggested he did give them full autonomy?

Great thread and point Marguide... I see that in a lot of the things that have gone on this season... all of those you mentioned, plus things like not going for it on 4th and 1 in ATL and many, many other decisions. Protecting your players from making mistakes is one thing... completely not trusting them to earn their paycheck when the game is on the line is something else entirely.

Yeah, I think he definitely did to start the season. I believe he's slowly took more control of play calling as the season has progressed. He's stated as much.

Yeah, I think the Hurney firing expedited the process as well. But, it's even more troubling that it feels like each time he's asserted more control he's made his most glaring mistakes.

Trying not to be a prisoner of the moment here, but it's really tough.

What was the coaching staff thinking when the Panthers where moving down the field on their last offensive drive at the end of the game where they needed to kick a field goal to go ahead with a few minutes left???

What do you do on that kind of drive??

Well you call plays to move the markers and wear down the clock....get the ball as close as possible for a chip shot field goal with a few seconds left on the clock............kick the FG as time runs out and win......

What do we do????

Instead of working plays that were moving the sticks like we did all the way down the field we get on their side of the feild and with 2nd and short yardage for another first down we take two downs to throw the ball down the field?.......trying to get a touchdown???

WTF???

with 2:27 on the clock why don't you get the first down and run the ball closer to the goal for a chip shot FG and leave no time left on the clock for the Bears to get the ball back???

I told myself when they were passing on those two downs that even if we made the FG we would lose the game when we kick back to the Bears and give Cutler the middle of the field to march down into FG territory with 10 to 15 yard passing plays in the middle.

Ron Rivera has no cognitive or organizational skills to manage this game.............

Mark my words.............RR will never be a head coach again after he gets fired from this team.

      Given that the immediate impact we need at edge. We almost certainly address that in Free agency, not in the draft. Same with Linebacker, unless Styles or Allen is still there at 19. I think the same for OT.  What is the position that we could draft in the 1st round and get immediate help in the first is how im approaching their decision-making  I know ill get dragged for this, but im thinking they go DT in the first. A guy that can play right away and be a complement to D.Brown to wreak havoc at the LOS.   So unless a top tier LB is there, I think DT will be the move.

      I think people forget that by his last season Steve Smith had the ass and he played like it - and for no really good reason other than that other stars were emerging on the team and he didn't want to share the spot light.  He was more of a locker room distraction than he was worth. He went on to have great performances with the Ravens' but G-man made the right move allowing him to move on from here.  I personally think it was addition by subtraction and we don't have a super bowl run with Smith on the roster. Steve Smith remains a narcissist who I've never seen internalize his own culpability when it comes to his relationships with others - it's always somebody else's fault as to why he was forced to act like an asshole. This video is a product ad.  I'm cringed that either of these two Panther greats are party to it.

      I think the ‘issue’ here is that we had two guys that clashed for several reasons. In some ways they were different, but in other ways they had a lot in common, and sadly they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Sometimes when you have two people like that together they are either going to love or hate each other, and if it’s the latter, you need someone to mediate and hope the two individuals are capable of putting their differences aside for the common good. In this instance, they couldn’t find a way to move forwards together because I don’t think either guy wanted to play second fiddle to the other. This video basically said neither guy had the tools to bridge that gap and mend that fence, and perhaps also were unwilling to give an inch at that stage in their lives and careers. So a divorce, while unfortunate, was always likely. Do we win the Super Bowl with Smitty and Cam? Well, it’s one of life’s big what ifs for us Panthers fans.
