Rivera Officially Worst Coach In Panthers History (And Amazingly, He Did It In Half the Time Seifert Took)

After losing to the Falcons earlier this season when they let a receiver behind them in the final minute, the Panthers were determined not to let that happen again.

But that didn’t stop Ron Rivera and his staff from calling the same coverage again, and again, and again as the Bears pecked their way to a game-winning field goal.

“They threw the same pass play all the way down the field,” Panthers safety Charles Godfrey said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “It wasn’t nothing they were doing. It was what we were in, the coverage we were in. That was a great play for that coverage. And they just ran that play all the way down the field.

The coverage we were in, we stayed in that coverage. That’s what happened.”

Jay Cutler completed 5-of-6 passes on the final drive, none of them longer than 12 yards. He kept throwing little slants to Brandon Marshall, and the Panthers didn’t change anything, having been burned previously.

“It’s one of those things where if you jump [the route] and they double-move you, now all of a sudden it’s a touchdown or the ball is in field goal range,” Rivera said. “We were trying to make them systematically beat us.”

Mission accomplished.

While the firing of general manager Marty Hurney a week ago was the first sign Rivera might not be on stable footing, he’s now 1-10 in games decided by a touchdown or less as the Panthers head coach.

He’s also 7-16 overall (.304 winning percentage), putting him safely below George Seifert (16-32, .333) as the losingest coach in franchise history.

Seifert got three years to earn that distinction.

Rivera might not.

He has to have regretted that as soon as it came out of his mouth. Even if that's the right statement phrase it affirmatively. Say "we were trying to eat up the clock and keep them out of Field Goal range by making them throw short".

You're still wrong, you still need to be beat in the face with a Herring, but at least you don't sound so passive and defeatist.

Jesus - and people are upset about Cam's press conferences.

    • it's pretty simple IMO.  The Tepper Panthers are the most unsuccessful professional sports in all of sports.  The problem isn't the posters here have changed.  The product dictates the atmosphere more than anything.  In reality, the daily convos about THE worst team in all of pro sports on a fanatics site....is going to feature harsh and critical convo.  Only one entity can actually change that.  It's the Carolina Panthers football team.
    • Yes message boards will always include that sort of stuff… However, this place has been a cess pool since the team took Bryce Young over CJ Stroud. It becomes a problem when it is accepted and promoted, which it has been here (even by at least one mod). Many posters sole purpose on this board is to try to dunk on others for having different opinions. We just had one write a novella on how talking about Bryce Young’s game winning drives “needs to stop”…after a win. They don’t want real conversation. It “needs to stop”. There are many posters here who literally only show up after losses to dead thread and try to dunk on others about the QB (MRenshaw is an easy example). I really don’t see much of that happening the other way around. There’s too many people that would rather the team be bad so they can feel justified for constant doom and gloom and negative opinions. It’s been pointed out by many over the past couple years. This just isn’t a place to have football discussions anymore because of the constant hyperbole. If you don’t subscribe to “Bryce Young is the worst QB ever who can’t throw the ball further than 5 yards and is the reason why we lose any game we lose and doesn’t help in any game we win”, then you are labeled a Bryce Young Stan.
    • if you believe he is watching every NFL game.....every week.....go right ahead.  I get it, he said something you like.  But that's like believing the talking heads on the ESPN shows are watching all the games.  You think Stephen A is watching the Panthers every Sunday too?  If Stephen A needs to go on First Take he certainly can pretend like he has watched every snap any player on the roster has taken lol.   No one is that isn't a Panther fan has been watching the 9-25 career go down every Sunday.  Or even a lot of Sunday's.  You know who knows more about Bryce Young than Long? The collective huddle.  What they are reviewing is stat sheets, highlights and in summaries.  It's an old formula lol.
