I really hope this month is a turning point for us

Realistically speaking, we've basically clinched a top 15 pick this year. You'll get an instant starter.

That said. I'm hoping we win out in December, yet Ron still gets released. What I'm really looking for is some late game heroics by some of our younger players (Cam, LaFell, Hardy, Norman), and not displays of coaching prowess. I've seen enough of Ron. I'm sick of watching us get M.Bisoned in the 4th quarter of every game, and I'd never seen us lose that way with so much frequency until he started coaching. He's a good X's and O's HC, and by that I mean we're not getting dominated schematically, but he's just a horrible decision maker. I've touched on this point before, so I'd rather not waste time elaborating but you can easily understand what I mean if you've been following the team this season.

Winning out will do a couple of things for us. It'll boost the morale of the team we have now, and most of those players will still be here next season. It's extremely hard to turnover a huge chunk of the roster given our specific situation. It'll also make this team more attractive to prospective executives and coaches moving forward.

Back to winning out, the key word here is hope. We've got 4 opponents left (Atlanta, New Orleans, San Diego, Oakland). It took this team playing some of its best football this season against the Falcons in their first game and they still somehow beat us. Highly unlikely that we defeat them, but the rest of the opponents are definitely beatable. We lost Ron Edwards, who took whatever run defense we had with him, so that won't help us.

As for the new GM, I'm confident Accorsi can help direct Richardson to the right answer, and I hope Richardson stops being so involved in everything. There's a big chance one of the frontrunning HC candidates (Marc Ross, Greg Roman) get offered the job, and I hope they bring the mentalities of their superiors with them. An annoying characteristic of Hurney was the fact that he thought his scouting was infallible. Start Fua, sign the guys I drafted to ridiculous contract extensions with paralyzing amounts of signing bonus money, trade up for this soft roadgrader, trade up for some shitty Florida State DE. This team needs to sign more free agents from other teams to compete. Nobody drafts 7 starters every year, but Hurney acted like he did for a bit.

Good post. Great point about hurney thinking he could draft 7 starters every year. Guy was delusional. I'm sure all GMs love their picks when they make them. The best ones, however, can cover up the busts with good roster management and recover. Hurney just insisted on staying the course with obvious busts until he finally got fired about 3 seasons too late.

Let's start by trying to win the coin toss first, seems hard enough...

No, seriously. This has been a bad season so far. Play-offs are gone, coaching staff most likely won't be in front of the steering wheel next season, and roster changes are badly needed.

Let's just start at the beginning, and hope that the new GM is someone who can help us with the cap situation, and manages to fill up the most needed gaps with our draft picks. I'm quite positive for the future, cause we (despite the negative balance right now) do have lots of talent at crucial positions. I believe we can make the coin flip the right side for the Panthers next season, hoping it will bring us close to PO.

    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
