Our depth

I was going to start a thread on what Cam is wearing or saying or on Rivera's emotions, but decided to make one football related.

With us losing close games in the 4th quarter, do you think our lack of depth has something to do with it? It seems like so many games just slip out of our grasp in the 4th quarter. Besides questionable coaching decisions, it seems to me we are just a step slow here on a pass coverage or missing a block there to get a first down. I think a small part could be our lack of depth, especially on the OLine and DLine...and secondary, Granted we don't have a lot of superior talent to start with in some of those spots, but it looks like the drop off is steeper than most teams.

Or maybe it's because of our uniforms...

yes. we are plugging in guys that have no business starting in the NFL as starters not backups.

nakamura is a great backup. terrible starter.

sherrod martin is a great backup. terrible starter.

byron bell is a phenomenal backup. mediocre starter.

captain munnerlyn is a phenomenal nickleback. terrible starter.

the list goes on and on. hurney's been ignoring key positions and starting late-round or UDFA talents thinking he's a genius and what's behind those guys depth-wise is usually even worse. i don't expect our problems to just disappear but getting rid of hurney and replacing him with a nuts-and-bolts football guy that knows how to build an NFL roster is going to do an incredible amount of good for the future of this football team.

Steve Young was a great backup. Nakamura is a mediocre backup and Martin is an average one. Let's not lose perspective.

Steve Young was just waiting for his turn.....he isn't what you define as a backup. backups aren't greats.

It's quite possible depth is a factor on the D-line where you typically rotate players, but on the O-line and secondary, not so much. Those guys don't rotate so it really shouldn't have any effect on 4th quarter performance. Conditioning certainly could be a factor.

As for the fact that some of the guys filling in due to injury are bad, that is very true, but they suck equally throughout the game, not just in the 4th.

    • Carolina Way is gone, it went out the window with the Belichick hiring. They'll hire the best coach they can, ignoring everything else if possible.    Athletic reports that the school's top two targets are Tommy Lloyd and Billy Donovan. They don't care the buyout for a coach either, they and the boosters are willing to spend and will be going outside of the coaching family tree 100%.
    • I don't think it's a homer though when I really feel this team can beat anyone.  The points that can be scored in bunches when the big three are on has high potential.  Moose has effort for days and IMO is the heart of the team.  And didn't see Miles becoming the team "vet" in the starting lineup just roleplaying lol.   We have to limit the turnovers though (Brandon Miller I'm looking at you bud, you are a bad ball handler) and some little things.   Colby off the bench is a cheat code and him and Kaulk have a nice little game going with the picks.    Sion playing every game and just getting better each game.  He has grit.  Grant and Green also grit.  We need replace Tillman with PJ Hall though.  Tillman looks like someone that shouldn't be on an NBA court, or at least with this team, he's just too slow for this tempo.   Even McNeely looked decent tonight and can drive.   If Kaulk and Moose could even be like 30% 3pt shooters man....
