Potential Front Office Hires

It's highly possible (some might even say likely) that Dave Gettleman won't be the only new name added to the Panthers front office this offseason. Ernie Accorsi's job as a consultant gave him the ability to suggest changes in front office structure. It's also reasonable to think Gettleman will want to put his own imprint on the organization, and do so with some people he knows and trusts.

Here are a few guys from the Giants that could conceivably be brought along and what roles they could fill.

Matt Harriss, Giants Director of Football Operations

Spent five years in the League Management Office where he worked with the salary cap and CBA. Has been assisting the front office with salary cap management and contract negotiation since 2006. Was mentioned by Giants reporter Mike Garafolo when asked by the WFNZ guys who Gettleman could conceivably bring with him. Would likely make a very good cap manager.

Matt Shauger, Giants Pro Scout

Ten years experience as a pro scout. Helped author a 125 page report on the Patriots that became the basis for the Giants game plan when they beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Could be a solid replacement for current Director of Pro Scouting Mark Koncz and possibly even serve as a guy Gettleman could groom to be his eventual replacement.

Joe Collins, Executive Scout

Collins has actually been in the scouting game even longer than Gettleman. He has 40 years of experience doing both college and pro scouting. From 1999-2001 he was Director of Player Personnel for the newly re-formed Cleveland Browns. He could hold the same role here if the Panthers decided to recreate that position (which, in my opinion, would be a good idea).

Jeremiah Davis / Steve Verderosa, Executive Scouts

Two more guys each having 25 years of scouting experience. Davis was once a coach and a recruiter in the college ranks. Verderosa previously worked in the scouting department of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Should the Panthers decide to part with with current Director of College Scouting Don Gregory, either of these two might be considered as a viable replacement.

To be clear, the Giants would have to give permission for any interviews. Also should be noted that there are plenty of other names to consider from the Giants and other teams where Gettleman has worked. Regardless, these are a few names to start a discussion of what other changes the front office might see.

Given that Gettleman has been a pro personel guy for the bulk of his career, he may try and get some trusted college scouts in here to help on that end if Gregory is gone. They're likely to have a sit down or two or three...you get my drift. We'll see what happens.

Great work, Mr. Scot. Seems like Harriss, like Sternfield for Gettleman, is Abrams' theoretical replacement as an assistant GM, but if Abrams isn't leaving, maybe we can grab him. That'd be great.

guys are going to hire who they know. People will have to get over that, and for the most part understand that familiarity with the other guy (and a common system) is more important than hiring random name that a fan recognizes.

I don't give any credence to the Abrams or Ross idea. I don't see them losing their executive scouts (I read that as national scouts), but maybe a few of the scouts will be up for grabs for a promotion to national.

Very possible.

The only thing I truly feel comfortable predicting is that Gettleman will bring along people with whom he's familiar, regardless of whether they're from the Giants or one of his other stops. Obviously, over the course of 25 years in a given business, you make a fair number of acquaintances.

I'd love for the Panthers to start using that sort of "pre-emptive apprenticeship" structure that the Giants and some others use. It's good strategy both in the office and on the roster.

Good writeup by the way. I'd agree with those suggestions. The org chart is definitely in need of some changes.

    • We agree here dawg. I'd love for Bryce to succeed as would all huddlers. I have not seen a single huddler hate Bryce for anything other than his play on the field / potential / skillset. He hasn't gotten any of the irrational hate having nothing to do with football that Cam got. And yeah I understood going into this season with Bryce again as there weren't a ton of options, but man we missed the fuging mark on upgrading at backup QB with someone who could actually push Bryce. Bryce had zero pressure on him with a 100% washed up Dalton being the only other NFL caliber QB in the system. That absolutely needs to change this offseason. Ideally with an actual starter upgrade but that seems extremely unlikely due to not having many FA options and a bad draft. But at the very least with someone like you mentioned, young/upside and/or day 3 pick in the draft.   Another note, we have a top paid and top performing OL, great young talent at WR incl. likely OROY, great RB group, average all around TE group, offensive coach with creativity in the system and good play designs (poor situational playcalling but still I put out current offensive coaching staff over Shula who held Cam back for instance). Not the absolute best situation for a QB to be in, but still a very good situation around him. And yet we have a bottom 8 offense (6th lowest points scored). Imagine taking a victory lap for a QB leading his team to the 6th lowest points scored in the league and the 22nd highest passer rating (despite being asked to do less than many other QBs; i.e. Bo Nix who isn't great either and has a slightly lower passer rating but Sean Payton actually lets him try to throw the ball deep and has him throw significantly more than Bryce). Crazy
    • similar to Atlanta and the NHL.  Atlanta has lost two NHL teams (and lost a minor leaguer).  Now there's another coalition pulling together another proposal for Atlanta to get an NHL expansion. While I'd like hockey to be back in Atlanta 'cause hockey is fun, I am skeptical that it'll happen based on previous teams' experience here alternatively: similar to Atlanta hosting a Major Tennis Tournament in advance of the US Open every mid/late summer.  Aside from the fact that Atlanta is said to be the country's largest Tennis playing city (with both USTA and ALTA, along with a number of side leagues) - playing tennis outdoors in Atlanta summer is miserable *and* they had difficulty attracting players... ticket sales were not good. So the Atlanta Open closed after 14 years.  They just couldn't make it happen, even if for all intents it appears to be massive tennis interest in the surrounding area.
    • So I saw where Luke was doing that show parallel to the game. Whatever it was, statcast something something, knew it would be a good watch. I don’t get ESPN any more but that would be one of the about few things I would watch outside of games.     He doesn’t fool around on the radio broadcast.
