Ernie Accorsi thoughts on Gettleman

good stuff about the new GM on the panthers site...

"You can go to some people and talk about a player from another team, and they'll go to their computer, look at their notes and give you a good comprehensive report. Dave, you could say, ‘Tell me about the fifth corner in Denver.' He's got a report right off the top of his head."

Gettleman served as the Giants' pro personnel assistant in 1998. A year later, Rooney retired.

"We did not expect this. It stunned me," Accorsi said. "But I felt so confident about Dave, we promoted him to the directorship immediately. He was a natural.

"I saw his executive ability. I saw his ability to administrate and hire people. He was the entire package."

.

.

.

"Six Super Bowls, three winners and three runner-ups," Accorsi said. "He's a winner. He has a championship background."

Accorsi is quick to credit Gettleman for helping shape the rosters that produced Super Bowl titles for New York .

Gettleman was primarily responsible for evaluating NFL free agents, and when the Giants tested the free agent market they rarely missed.

"We drafted well to win those two Super Bowls, but we basically never made an error on a major free agent," Accorsi said. "Talking about unrestricted free agents, the guys you go out and pay pretty good money for. Whether it was (wide receiver) Plaxico Burress, (linebacker) Antonio Pierce, (offensive lineman) Kareem McKenzie, (offensive lineman) Shaun O'Hara – whoever it was, we hit on those guys."

But Gettleman's influence extended beyond the free agent market. Accorsi wanted his input on all personnel matters.

"When we talked about high draft choices, I had him scout those players because I wanted his opinion," Accorsi said. "I just grew to have so much faith in him."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a football guy :D

I have to believe this single move just changed the culture of this Org. Teamed with Rivera, I have faith this team is finally returning to our roots. Hire good football people and go about your budness. Still need a cap guy I guess. But that shouldn't be a tough find.

There is no reason not to believe the bright future we all envisioned cannot be reached.

IMO, the only two mistakes JR has made are, Letting Polian go, and keeping Hurney too long. This is not a mistake. This is a franchise changing hire. Too bad some are missing out on the excitement with their fear of the past.

But you said there was nothing wrong with our culture and your giddy was through the roof just a few weeks ago.

On the flipside, here are Pat Yasinskas' thoughts on Gettleman from a chat earlier today...

CJ (NC): With the hiring of Gettleman does he have a good history of picking players in the draft? We are going to need an extremely good draft class this year to make up for the many losses we are going to have?

PY: Gettleman has NO history of picking players in draft. He' been a pro personnel guy, not a college scout.

From Gettleman's bio, reposted in the Observer (link)

Scouting experience: Scouting intern for Buffalo Bills in 1986. Scout for Bills in 1987. Bills scout representative for BLESTO 1988-1993. Scout for Denver Broncos from 1994-98. Scout for New York Giants in 1998.

    • The difference is about how much player input is allowed and encouraged in the decision making process. Top down teams tend to dictate to players how everything is handled. Disagreements are handled by the coach and players are expected to do what they are told regardless of what they think or feel.  Players are perceived as commodities to be used until we find better. In player led teams player input is encouraged and valued. Players and especially leaders are expected to settle their own disagreements and be accountable to the team but mostly to each other. Players are family to be appreciated and supported in their growth. Is the reality of football the same in both? Yeah there are limited positions, football is a business and winning is the bottom line. Coaches get final say and run the program because that is their job. But in player led teams they feel valued, appreciated, part of a larger whole. Most people who have worked at multiple jobs know exactly what I am talking about. When players try to run the show and don't value  coach input that isn't a player led team, that is a circus which we surely are familiar with in our past.
    • For our pics and trades tonight and tmrw.  Remember, Aho was a 2nd rounder and Slavin was a 4th rounder.
    • Seems to be the consensus from the talking heads. I really wish we had double dipped at center in the 2nd round. Sion will never play in the league.
