Clayton: Clausen is Trade Worthless

This thread is ridiculous.

Hurney drafted a QB late in the 2nd round that was a value pick at that spot and he did not pan out.

Go check how many 1-2 round QB's have been busts.

I swear. Some if you hate so many aspects of this team that calling yourself a fan is laughable.

Hurney drafts Clausens. Schneider drafts Wilsons.

Okay, I did. 1st & 2nd round QBs from 2008 - 2011.

2011: Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Dalton, Kaepernick. No real busts there.

2010: Bradford, The Golden Calf of Bristol and Clausen. 2 busts out of 3 players

2009: Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman, White. No real busts there, not even White can be considered because he hasn't played.

2008: Ryan, Flacco, Brohm, Henne. 1 bust (Brohm) of 4.

Total "bust" factor: 3 of 16 (18.75%)

Guess it all comes down to your definition of a "bust."

I also think it probably comes down to your definition of a "fan," also.

My point is that Clausen had a very productive college career. Drafting him late in the 2nd round was a value pick and was a smart pick. Now, I don't think anyone would have imaginged that he would be as bad as he has been. Many did not know whether he was a franchise guy, but most thought he woudl be a legit QB or very good back-up QB.

If we had taken him high in the first round, then bash Hurney. For taking a chance with huge upside late in the 2nd round, it was not a bad pick.

It just turned out that Clausen is very damaged goods.

I agree to a point MH, and I see where you're coming from. I can't remember ever being as angry about anything else the Panthers have done besides that pick.

I grew up in SoCal, know the school, know some people and was familiar with some of the circumstances surrounding his going to Notre Dame. I am very familiar with his background and watched him play most of his HS and college career... hoping all along that maybe someday he's just "get it."

I knew that night as I watched the draft unfold that Jimmy Clausen, if he continued to fall down the draft board, would be a Panther because they had no choice but to grab him if he was there. I was begging someone else to take him. The last thing I wanted was Jimmy Clausen putting on a Panther uni. I began ranting and railing against the pick the day after the draft and exactly what I thought would happen- did. I personally don't think Jimmy Clausen wants anything to do with being an NFL QB, but what else is there for a kid who was raised on football, groomed to be a QB by Daddy and knows nothing else?

Look where the Panthers are today. If they do not make an effort to re-sign Anderson, they will be forced to go out and find a QB...again... for the third time in 4 years. Think about it- having to go find a QB 3 years out of 4. That's a pretty strong indication there are problems at the position. The only thing worse than the 2010 draft (LaFell, Hardy) was the 2009 draft (Munnerlyn).

I also thought Clausen was a huge douche and did not really want him as a Panther. But, I could not blame Hurney from taking him late in the 2nd. We desperately needed a QB and Jimmy was a value pick.

Still think he is a douche. Girl that works for me knew him in college...and she says he was a huge douche.

If Jimmy doesn't have what it takes to make it in the league why are we wasting a roster spot and dollars on him? Shouldn't we just cut him and move on?

Well, couple other issues come into play. First and foremost is the contract he's under:

7/28/2010: Signed a four-year, $6.3 million contract. The deal includes $2.533 million guaranteed and a fourth-year escalator that could boost Clausen's 2013 base salary to $2.85 million. Even if Clausen does not activate the escalator, his 2013 salary is fully guaranteed.

2013: $575,000

2014: Free Agent

The pickle the Panthers find themselves in is simple- they have to keep Jimmy for 2 reasons which I'm not sure they ever saw coming. First of which being they are in salary cap hell and cutting Clausen only adds to those woes, and I think that 4th year escalator may come into play as a cap issue should the Panthers decide to part ways.

The second part of that is Derek Anderson is a free agent and unless the Panthers make an effort to re-sign him, this will be the 3rd time in the last 4 years the Panthers are actively seeking a QB. They cut Clausen and let Anderson walk to Cleveland or somewhere else and the Panthers are having to come up with some cash they don't have to replace not one, but 2 QBs.

Bottom line- Clausen will finish out his contract through the 2013 season and will end up on a beach back in SoCal next year doing something outside of football.
