here's a list of 2013 cap hits by player. whose useless asses do you cut to give yourself some extra room to sign some free agents?

What people need to be looking at is guaranteed and dead money not total salary. All the rest isn't guaranteed and can be dumped pretty easily with little consequence. For example if Williams isn't gone this year as a June 1st cut he will gone next year. Salaries are usually backloaded with little expectation they will see all of it. There will be more cuts next year as the cap stays flat but our overall salaries go up. That will happen across the league which also means there will be more players to chose from as well. We are under the cap without much fanfare or pain. Similarly we could extract another 5-8 million without a huge problem. If people on here can find 5 or 6 million with little problem, imagine what the guys can do who actually know all the details and all the ins and out of the contracts.

Way too much angst goes on regarding who we can or can't sign because we have no money. We have the money to sign whoever we want outside of the high priced guys who went today who we were never going to get anyway given Gettleman isn't going to overspend. The cap can be easily manipulated and many contracts are made with the expectation they will be restructured in a few years anyway.

Anyone think we will pay Beason 10,000,000 next year?? You think that we won't restructure and extend Greg Olsen next year so we convert some of that 5 million in salary to a signing bonus to save several million. I can easily see 20 million in cuts we will make next year without a big issue. They are already planning for 2014 and beyond.

i still wanna go buy a free agent with 1.3 mil worth of clausen and armanti's tears

That might be in the plans. Be patient, grasshopper................. I expect we will be busy down the road when players who didn't go early suddenly want to land somewhere and are willing to sign 1 year deals which Gettleman is supposedly very fond of. (yeah I know I ended the sentence with a preposition).

I look at that list and I wonder how a guy coming off 3 torn ACLs could possibly count 7 million against the cap at a position that would warrant a salary half that number..

The things Richardson allowed to happen in Carolina........

The level of stupidity is staggering.

I hope I recognize sarcasm when I see it. :geek:

I just want to know where the idea that Hurney was a 'cap genius' came from? I must have read that over a hundred times on this site.

because he was able to scramble around in the last minute to get us under the cap every year, but obviously we just kept getting worse and worse

For me it was not realizing how horribly he structured the contracts.

Had the DWill deal had payed out the cap hit on the bonus earlier he could be cut easily.

We bought the concept of "restructuring is ok".

We learned.

it's a process. :D

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone and we have Taylor Moton inked to a recent extension. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
