Draft Day Trades? Highly Unlikely.

For those expecting some type of trade on draft day, its not likely. Carolina has the occasional trade, but the Giants, hardly ever. The Giants normally stand pat with their picks. Last major trades the Giants had were 2004 when they traded Rivers to SD and then 2 years before when they traded up 1 spot to get Shockey. I see no real reason Gettleman wont carry over that tradition with the success the Giants have had.

With the change in the rookie wage scale I disagree. So really you are judging gettlemen on two years were the giants had more then enough picks to fill needs on a solid team and he wasnt the final decision maker. I do think trading up is out of the question, however the giants never really needed to trade down to acquire more picks. So Ill let this draft decide how gettle works the board.

i wouldn't rule one out, but i agree it's not something to count on or very likely.

some have looked at players they've talked to and noticed the players that show up later in the first round in mocks and listed as late first rounders by draftniks, but i wouldn't put stock into any draft boards by any draftnik. only board that matters is what each team has and they ain't letting you peek.

i mentioned in another thread that one thing that frustrates people is that with the exception of a handful of players at the top end of this draft, there's not really a whole lot of separation between players you'll find drafted in the mid-first to late second or really early third rounds. that's not because this draft sucks, but because of just how deep and talented this draft is in certain positions. people want us to trade back because they want a first rounder that is way ahead of players they'd find in the second, but that just isn't going to happen and it's a situation that most teams are having to deal with.

people may think that we're settling for the guy we draft if we get stuck at 14, but i don't think we'll be disappointed by our pick regardless of when in the first round. if we had a 3rd rounder i think we could easily come away with 3 legit starters. maybe not dynamic, but still solid guys that can be counted on for years.

Hurney definitely loved to trade. Doubt we'll see trades quite like that again.

Gettleman may be coming from a team that didn't trade quite as much, but we also have only five picks. With hat in mind, trading down to to try and get more wouldn't surprise me. Trading a player for picks is less likely but still possible.

We'll see.

i really don't want us to do any mortgaging the future trades like hurney did so often.

i don't mind trading picks after the second for vets, but trading them for unknown and untested players...meh. i don't want to see that again.

i think this year might be a year we have more pressure to trade back because we only have 5 but if we do i doubt it's the norm. if we don't trade back i expect us to be the biggest players in the udfa market.

Trading a player is highly unlikely, trading to move around within the draft is unknown at this point.

Gettleman has no draft history, to assume anything more than that is foolish.

However, it's the offseason, anything is possible this time of year...maybe sometimes.

understood, but he comes from an organization that rarely traded in the draft and had success. Why would he be compelled to change that philosiphy?

Trading away future picks was something Hurney learned from Bobby Beathard. Pretty sure we're done with that practice for good (thank God).

I wouldn't mind seeing us become one of those teams that likes to stockpile draft picks.

If they can make a smart deal they will trade back. It's an ideal draft to move back on. Just need some team to want some guy at 14

Trading back to the late teens / early twenties and still getting someone like Tavon Austin or another impact player would make me giddy.

he may not have a desire to deviate from that, but this year he might just to pick up an extra pick.

when has he worked for a team that had only 5 picks heading into the draft? i think that's the bigger deal to him than deviating from standard practices.

he seems like an opportunist who can make things happen when needed and we need that extra pick. if the need is great, he'll make it happen.

with hurney i don't think there was ever a question of how good a trade he was going to make....it was which team hurney was going to invite to rape us. he seemed more like the bend over and take it kind of negotiator.

gettleman seems like the type who walks in with a baseball bat and the guy on the other side of the table calls him 'sir'.

Giants Draft Movement

2004 - 1st round - traded for Eli

2005 - gave up first round pick

2006 - traded down in first round

NY still had a window much like Carolina did where they had some major first round movement. Carolina didn't do it that much under Hurney outside that small window in 08 and 09....Carolina's window was just bad when they did it

      Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.

      Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.

      Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
