Blast from the (fairly recent) past

Mr. Scot

So here we are about a month into free agency and two weeks from draft day.

We've had a fair number of decent, bargain free agent signings, and we're actually in better cap shape even with those signings than we were before free agency started.

With those things in mind...

Remember when a lot of us were seriously worried that we were going to end up with Brandon Beane as our GM?

Justified or not, the board's been pretty euphoric with the moves Dave Gettleman has made so far.

Still, I can't help remembering all the angst there was before he got the job

The process was definitely slower than most hoped it would be. And then when Pat Yasinskas started popping off with the ridiculous notion that Brandon Beane had a real shot at the job (made worse when Joe Person parroted that theory) some folks were scared that saga wouldn't end well.

But at least for now, it looks like it did :D

Anything said about Beane is pure speculation, as for all we know the guy could've stepped in with a similar savvy... unlikely, but unknown nonetheless. I'm certainly happy with a somewhat proven commodity from a winning organization, but Beane didn't do anything to warrant criticism other than happen to be on Hurney's staff and have his name get tossed around by people like Yas who frequently seem to be clueless.

After researching Gettleman's background and seeing his initial press conference I had a certain level of expectation for him coming in, and so far he has fulfilled that and more. Also, I will never read another Pat Yasinkas article. His credibility has been permanently shot to hell, let's not even give that ass hat anymore clicks matter of fact.

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
