Wow, 1999 draft was a way to start off the millennium!

1998 was worse. Only player that made a contribution (if you could call it that) was donald hayes.

1999 at least netted Rucker.

I've always been bummed that we could have had the Titans picks in consecutive years of McNair and George instead of Collins and Biakabatuka.

I'm really glad Hurney isn't around to trade picks any more. He had some high points, but holy poo he just gave some premium picks away for absolutely nothing. Gettleman seems to know what he's doing, but we won't know until after it's all said and done.

Some of the highlights (or lowlights) over the years so far :(

Under Bill Polian...

- chose Tshimanga Biakabutuka over Eddie George; Stephen Davis was taken later on that same draft, in the 4th round (1996)

- targeted Kerry Collins as the quarterback to build the team around rather than Steve McNair; Polian believed Collins was the next Jim Kelly (1995)

- drafted Tyrone Poole 22nd overall; with the 23rd pick, the Patriots took Ty Law (1995)

- wasted a third rounder on J C Price; Terrell Owens was taken one pick later (1996)

- with Mike Vrabel still on the board, chose Kinnon Tatum in the 3rd; used 4th and 5th on Tarek Saleh and Matt Finkes (1997)

- used the 27th overall pick on Rae Carruth (1997)

With Jack Bushofsky and Dom Anile in the front office and Dom Capers having plenty of input...

- chose Jason Peter over Vonnie Holliday; this after telling Holliday they'd be "dancing on the table" if he were available at their pick (1998)

- took Chuck Wiley over Leonard Little; took Mitch Marrow later in the same round; he never played a down (1998)

- chose Donald Hayes about eight picks before the Falcons chose Tim Dwight (1998)

- gave away two first rounders for Sean Gilbert (1999)

- selected Chris Terry three picks before the Redskins chose Jon Jansen (1999)

Under George Seifert...

- used the 23rd overall pick on Rashard Anderson (2000)

- took both Alvin McKinley and Gillis Wilson ahead of Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila who went in round five to the Packers (2000)

Under Marty Hurney...

- selected DeShaun Foster over Clinton Portis based on info from USC assistant Kelly Skipper, son of RB coach Jim Skipper (2002)

- used 2nd rounder (50) on Bruce Nelson, taken ahead of, among others, Anquan Boldin (54) Osi Umenyiora (56) Lance Briggs (68) and Jason Witten (69); seven picks after the Cowboys took Witten, we drafted Mike Seidman (2003)

- chose Ricky Manning Jr at 82; Patriots would later use pick 120 on Asante Samuel (2003)

- took one year wonder Keary Colbert in the 2nd round (2004)

- had ten picks in the year following; only the first - Thomas Davis - and fifth rounder Geoff Hangartner contributed much of anything at all; 3rd rounder Atiyyah Ellison didn't even make the final roster; Evan Mathis, Jovan Haye and Joe Berger would later leave and contribute on other teams (2005)

- took Rashab Butler at 89; Saints would later use pick 108 on Jahri Evans (2006)

- chose Dwayne Jarrett in round two; over "the other" Steve Smith was taken later that round; Jacoby Jones in the 3rd (2007)

- the next year, began the trend of trading away future picks by trading up to get Jeff Otah (2008)

- the pick we traded to Philly was then traded to Buffalo; players available at that spot had we kept the pick included Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt, Ziggy Hood and James Laurinaitis (2009)

- instead of any of those, we traded away another future pick to move up and acquire spinmeister Everette Brown (2009)

- the 49ers used the 1st round pick they got from us to draft Mike Iupati; Maurkice Pouncey was taken a pick later; Devin McCourty a few picks after that, and the Patriots picked Rob Gronkowski in the 2nd (2010)

- in that same draft, the Panthers tried to trade up to catch the falling Jimmy Clausen, who fell to them anyway (2010)

- although they failed to trade up for Clausen, the Panthers still managed to trade away a high future pick when they gave their 2011 second rounder to the Patriots to move up and get Armanti Edwards; six picks later, the Saints drafted Jimmy Graham (2010)

- the pick that was traded to the Pats wound up being the number one pick in round two; the Pats used it on Ras-I Dowling (2012)

- the Panthers would later use a third rounder on Terrell McClain; who would wind up being cut the following year (2012)

- Sione Fua and Brandon Hogan were taken with consecutive picks later in the draft; Hogan is gone and Fua is a backup who may not stick (2012)

Hurney was good in the 2nd round though. Veritable who's who of future hall of famers.

Really we did not do too bad most of the time until we started trading away first rounders.

Great drafts are made in the mid-late rounds. As a GM I can throw a dart at the first round and probably end up with a starter. Especially if you are in the top half.

Look at all the 2nd round busts Hurney had.

I do not see this history as being all that bad.

1995- Collins had a long career, Capers screwed that up. We got a couple of decent OL in this draft too

1996 - Moose was a great pick and Timmy might have been good if not for all the injuries.

1997- Minter and Mangum were long term starters

Regardless of who's to blame for Collins, it's pretty hard to justify targeting him over McNair. Even less so Biakabutuka over George given the style of offense we were running (still remember Polian saying he had no concerns when asked about Bakabutuka's durability questions).

We got a few good players out of those drafts, but this was when the team was being built from scratch. Given the results, you'd have to say overall it was a failure.

1998 - Meh, this one was truly awful

1999 - Rucker was a great pick. Terry and Naives contributed for a while.

Rucker was a great pick. Terry had his moments, but over Jon Jansen? Ugh :(

Giving Capers a voice in personnel decisions was one of the worst mistakes this team ever made.

2000 - Grant was a good player, James and Towns were good for late rounders.

2001 - Probably our best draft ever. Smith is our best player ever. Morgan and Jenkins were probowlers.

George Seifert was generally pretty good at the draft. Sadly, he was a massive failure in some other aspects of the job :( He definitely left some good players for John Fox to work with, though.

2002 - Second best draft ever. Peppers was/is a beast while Foster and Spoon were solid.

2003 - Gross was a great pick and RMJ was a playoff hero for us.

2004 - Gamble and Wharton were solid starters for a long time.

2005 - Davis was a solid pick. We probably gave up too soon on Mathis. Hangartner has been good for a late round pick.

2006 - DW has been great at times. Overpaying him after his rookie deal expired does not make the intial pick a bad one. Anderson was a solid starter for a long time.

These first five Hurney-run drafts were done with Tony Softli running the scouting. Word on him was that as time went on, he spent more time trying to get a GM job than he did doing the job he had. That really came to a head in the overall awful draft of 2005. Softli finally got his wish with the Rams, and promptly ran them into the ground.

2007 - Probably our third best draft. Beason was a best prior to his injuries. Kalil is one of the better centers in the league. Johnson is a beast. Rosario had one great game...

2008 - This is where Hurney jumped the shark with his trading of future picks. Stewart was a solid pick. Otah was a good pick too but for his health issues. Connor, Schwartz and Bernadeau are low level starters.

2009 - Munnerlyn was a good late round pick. This draft was screwed by the prior year.

2010 - Hardy has been solid and Gettis looked good before getting hurt. Another draft killed by trading away the first round pick.

2011 - Not much besides Cam. Fua may still develop.

2012 - Keuchly looks like a great pick. Alexander has potential to be one too. Too soon to judge really.

Really we did not do too bad most of the time until we started trading away first rounders.

These are the drafts since Don Gregory took over college scouting. Overall, kinda hit or miss. You can't rightly blame Gregory for some of the uber-stupid moves that Hurney made. I'm hoping that he works better with Gettleman. If not, I could see him being replaced.
