I'm just wondering what the game plan is for when smitty goes down or retires.

 

i get this feeling that WR is going to be addressed the same lame way that DT was addressed for years and I've seen nothing to change that perception.

 

you know we look back at the superbowl run and think, hey what did we do differently? and our minds go to that dominant DL that I'm gald we have again, but there's also something else...we took a shot on a short little WR who was more of just a return specialist with anger issues and a napoleon complex and we didn't spend even a first round on him, but we still took a chance even though there was no guarantee that he could supplant either starter and there were there were higher rated prospects on the board. we took a gamble that this little kid could amount to something and it paid off, but that was just luck. we were lucky that the gamble we made worked out like it did.

 

tbh, it's just never really been a priority with this team. the best attempts we've made was a second rounder from USC with work ethic issues and a QB that we hoped would somehow turn into a star and a third rounder and what else? 

 

we got lucky with smith. it should have been a bigger priority in other years. but the problem here is that we can't even get lucky with a draft pick if we don't use one. 

 

until it's made into an actual priority we'll be limited in what this offense can do long term, and i don't care who we have as QB.

Not by choice on my end. I've been a fan for 20 years and have never made it to a game. I just started going to training camp a few years ago so that is what I look forward to every year.

When you try to fill a need with your picks is when you take Jimmy Clausen's and Terrell McClain's.

I remember these exact same conversations, except in the past it was QB's.

This years draft class lacked talent at wide receiver. Gettle worked most of them out and must have not liked what he saw, but the fact he worked out ten or more says he plans to address that position. Next years receiver class is great and we could have a potentially elite receiver in the first or second round.

we don't know it's going to be great. there are no guarantees. there are no guarantees that an elite one/sure thing will fall into our lap. there is no guarantee that at the time we draft there won't be some big fat guy we just happen to like a little more. 

 

sometimes you have to reach a little to make the team as a whole better. do we have the guts to do that?

Too be very honest with you I would have tried real hard to get back in the first to take Hopkins like I kept telling people(you can check the threads)I knew he wouldn't have been there in the 2nd. I think he will be the texans #1 when AJ is gone. If you can get two starters in the draft (Star, Hopkins) you can fill in depth with free agents and undrafteds.

We were lucky that Star fell to us really lucky. When you get lucky it gives you room to take a chance and trade back up. It's only reaching if it doesn't work.

Worst case scenario I would have traded into the 3rd to get Keenan but they spent a lot of time with him so maybe they know something I don't.

that happens when you've got a bad evaluator making the picks. not all reaches result in failure. it's not a bad thing to pick someone ranked a little lower on your board to make the team more balanced, esp. when you have someone who is a great evaluator.

Similar to the way people complain about Rivera not being a brilliant D mind and defensive gameplan's costing us ....despite him having a joke DT/LB group and weak secondary in 2011, and having no DTs and a joke for secondary talent in 12

We addressed our biggest need....DT was easily our BIGGEST need.

 

Now we have to find a #1 WR, but we did what we set out to do in the draft IMO.

 

Make no mistake about it, however, we are not set at WR...not even close.

You have to look at it like this Lafell is in the last year of his contract.

Hixon is on a one year deal

Ginn is on a one year deal

Smitty is 34 and looks very happy outside of football and could hang it up at anytime.

It's very possible that your top 4 wrs could be gone next year. Then what the fug are you going to do??

I mean, in the end, does our team really need another WR picked in the 4th-6th round? I don't really understand the issue.

Unless you're suggesting taking a WR over Star or Short in which case I can't help ya.

I get what you are saying. This is why the draft is a crapshoot. It's like saying would you rather take this linebacker who has a better chance at being great, than a WR that doesn't have the same chance. You don't know in the end how it will pan out but based on your evaluations the linebacker is the better pick. So in your mind you have a statistically better chance at making your team better overall by picking the linebacker. I think that is Gettleman's way of thinking about it.

 

It sucks that we are in this position with WR. I understand the position we are in. I was very vocal about taking a WR in the first two rounds, because I want to take the burden off of Cam. It's absolutely ridiculous how much we have put on his shoulders.  I just try and understand the man who is making these picks and the thought process that goes with that, because at the end of the day he knows a BAGILLION times more than we ever will (and he has the resume to back it up).
