Five NFC teams that failed to fill needs (ATL & CAR included)

Recommended Posts

I mean, in the end, does our team really need another WR picked in the 4th-6th round? I don't really understand the issue.

Unless you're suggesting taking a WR over Star or Short in which case I can't help ya.

A lot of this teams troubles still stem from "Hurney Magic" or lack thereof

We don't need any more 4-6 round WRs, we need to try and address it with higher picks, and that is something I think we'll do in next years draft.

I'm talking about next year.

what's the plan? do we make it a priority? or do we try to double up on the OL again and hope that the next year is ok for WR?

WR is important. we've got TRY to get someone to fill smitty's shoes rather than just hope some guy falls into our lap early or one of our udfas or former first round busts we pick up in  FA breaks out...all of which requires a whole lot more luck than reaching a little bit fir a WR in the first couple rounds.

Too be very honest with you I would have tried real hard to get back in the first to take Hopkins like I kept telling people(you can check the threads)I knew he wouldn't have been there in the 2nd. I think he will be the texans #1 when AJ is gone. If you can get two starters in the draft (Star, Hopkins) you can fill in depth with free agents and undrafteds.

We were lucky that Star fell to us really lucky. When you get lucky it gives you room to take a chance and trade back up. It's only reaching if it doesn't work.

Worst case scenario I would have traded into the 3rd to get Keenan but they spent a lot of time with him so maybe they know something I don't.

One thing I wouldn't do is just sit dead in my chair and just take who ever is left

I personally don't like that because you are sacrificing your future for the present. We're not quite there yet to be making moves like that.  This is a process that will take time to make us a more complete team. Look at the 49ers who had 10+ draft picks. We want to get into a position to be like that.  It does suck that a quality WR didn't fall to us in the 2nd but you don't sacrifice your future for the present when we haven't even shown to be a playoff team year in and year out. And I don't think a WR would push us over that edge as much as the 2 DT's we picked. Cam has weapons on this team, not the quality we would all like, but he does have them. But obviously just my opinion.

I'm not sacrificing the future I'm acknowledging the fact that your top 4 wrs might not be on the roster next year.

I think it's as high of a priority as DT was this year. Though it'd be hard to pass up a franchise LT or Clowney, because, you know, Clowney.

Agreed, any team would take Clowney no matter what.

You have to look at it like this Lafell is in the last year of his contract.

Hixon is on a one year deal

Ginn is on a one year deal

Smitty is 34 and looks very happy outside of football and could hang it up at anytime.

It's very possible that your top 4 wrs could be gone next year. Then what the fug are you going to do??

exactly.

the future of the WR position is nothing but one big question mark....and I'm not talking about years down the road. I'm talking in 2014 .

we are close to being backed into a huge corner and will be forced into reaching out for scraps from other teams or reaching big time for WRs because we didn't do anything to shore up the position for the ling haul.

WR is a top priority next season. Wether its via FA, draft or both. But the fact of the matter is, there weren't any "top" talented WRs left by #44. Only way we could've gotten one is by trade. And that sure as hell shouldn't have happened with only 5 picks this year. And wouldve cost us a 1st-2nd rounder next year. I'd rather make a huge trade next season for one of the top guys.

so do you reach or go bpa?

you back yourself into a corner with  a position once again and what do you do next? do you take what you know you desperately need knowing they may not be a sure thing and that you have a couple guys ranked higher or stick to your philosophical guns?

it just sucks that we are getting ourselves into that situation once again.

my hope right now is that one or two of the million WRs we have on the roster right now turns into studs because as much as i admire gettleman's abilities, i don't completely trust his ability to get the WR  future situation handled.

Smith (Would suck if he isn't on the roster next year)

Lafell ( Would suck, but could be replaced)

Hixon and Ginn ( we don't know what we have with them yet, or if we can resign them if they are worth it)

We don't know what our cap situation will be like next year either (cutting/restructures)

We could essentially replace Hixon and Ginn as easily as we signed them

Smith is really the only concern for me.

sorry about the neg rep. fat thumbs. I'll try to get someone to fix it for you if it matters.

anyway...so what's the plan for finding Smith's replacement? wait for the right guy or get aggressive and swing for the fences a little?

Smitty is good to go for this season. After that though, he needs to pass the reins onto someone else, a playmaker. No one on our roster other than Smitty has shown #1 potential.

Depending on how much longer Smitty wants to play, he needs to be moved to #2 or #3 after this season. It is just how it is.

Not addressing this problem in this years draft was OK by me, because of the "patches" we brought in, along with Lafells decent play and Gettis / Adams waiting in the wings trying to prove themselves. Our WR corps after this season though, is nothing without Smitty being the #1 threat.

Make it happen in next years draft, although if Gettis or Adams breaks out it that would be effing sweet. Lafell has reached his ceiling i think...

Fixed the neg...

We're going to have to get aggresive with this roster spot. As I said before we may have to do an ATL type trade next season. And I also hope we try to go WR via FA (Nicks).. but its a must do at this point. At the end of the season the situation could be worse or just slightly better. We'll just have to see.
